Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President Student Affairs: Engagement & Inclusive Excellence, the Director has overall responsibility for the activities, programs, and operations of the Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services (IMQ) at Northern Arizona University (NAU).

IMQ serves all students focusing on gender identity, sexual orientation, and racially & ethnically diverse populations. Through academic support, holistic guidance, identity development, 1:1 mentoring, programming, and partnerships across campus, IMQ advocates for students to become the best versions of themselves. IMQ offers resources and support to empower students to become self-sufficient and reach their goals.

The Director of IMQ must be a collaborative leader, responsible for directing the staff in the development and delivery of programs and services designed specifically to achieve persistence and graduation rates equal to or above the overall university average for students who have been historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes, in consultation with supervisor and staff, the overall department vision, goals, objectives, and plans consistent with the mission of the division and the university.
  • Initiates and participates in overall program development and assessment and organizes resources to achieve goals.
  • Provides formative and summative evaluation of departmental and programmatic effectiveness.
  • Provides oversight for program operations to ensure program goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with priorities, as well as time and funding limitations.
  • Directs the overall recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and e valuation of two Assistant Directors, two Coordinators, two Graduate Assistants and thirteen student Inclusion & Diversity Scholars.
  • Provides direct service to individual students and coordinates over all departmental efforts to increase the number of gender, sexual, racially, and ethnically diverse students served by the IMQ in order to have a positive impact on persistence and graduation.
  • In cooperation with Indigenous Student Support Services and other culturally diverse student organizations, develops, promotes and implements a comprehensive array of educational, academic, cultural and social programs and services for student including cultural heritage weeks.
  • Prepares, monitors, and maintains oversight of department budgets. Provides financial and statistical reports, projections, and recommendations as needed. Seeks outside grant funding to support department initiatives.
  • Contributes as a strategic member of the Student Affairs division. Represents the department on various division and university committees. Participates in retention initiatives and program planning teams.
  • Provides reports and recommendations on the activities of the department. Compiles reports for presentations to campus and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity, inclusion, and the university’s affirmative action plan.
  • Manage the outcomes assessment and documentation of Inclusion & Diversity Scholar Peer Mentoring student success initiatives.
  • To work on an ongoing basis with various campus partners departments such as: Admissions, Financial Aid, Health Promotions, Residence Life, Gateway Advising, Career Planning & Placement and various academic colleges/departments who focus on recruitment, retention, and the success of underrepresented students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

NAU is currently engaged in an Organizational Growth and Effectiveness Initiative, which focuses on positioning the University for future success of its operational practices. As a result, some aspects of this position may be subject to change, such as, but not limited to: duties, titles, reporting structure, etc.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree AND six years’ experience working with students in higher education OR a combination of work experience and education and/or student mentoring programming and/or student success programming, which includes two years supervising and coordinating the work of others; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education student services with a focus on student retention and success, particularly students form the southwest region of the US, students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education and LGBTQIA students.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Experience working with students from various gender identities, sexual orientations, racial and ethnically diverse backgrounds in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to students, prospective students, and their families.
  • Experience developing, managing, and assessing student service programs.
  • Excellent supervisory, organization, and training skills including conflict resolution.
  • Experience with fiscal management and budget oversight, including grant-funded programs.
  • Effective written and oral communication, as well as presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team.
  • Experience developing strong working relationships and collaborating with campus community and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work a varied work schedule with flexible hours to participate in evening and weekend events as necessary.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

Commensurate with experience.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment.
