MILLIKIN UNIVERSITY invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant or Associate Professor of Music–Orchestra Conductor. Position begins August 2020. Rank to be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Completed doctorate required.

As Music Director, the successful candidate will provide leadership to all aspects of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra (a hybrid orchestra comprised of Millikin faculty, students, and per-service musicians) and teach and direct the Millikin Chamber Orchestra (student string players). Evidence of recruitment through both personal and university ensemble performances and interaction with high school music programs is expected. The successful candidate will demonstrate a collegial attitude and the ability to communicate effectively. Additional expectations include student advising & mentoring, university service in the form of faculty governance, and involvement with the campus community through attendance of recitals, concerts, workshops, and festivals.

Primary responsibilities include teaching, conducting, and programming for MDSO subscription concerts, pops concerts, community outreach, and recruitment events. A secondary teaching area is desirable. Annual collaboration with Opera Theater and the School of Theater & Dance productions may comprise a portion of the MDSO and MCO seasons. The candidate will work closely with the Symphony Orchestra Guild of Decatur and local media to support and promote the orchestra and the Millikin School of Music. Additional teaching responsibilities will be assigned according to the candidate’s areas of expertise and needs of the School of Music.

Review of applications will begin September 27, 2019 and continue until the position is filled. Finalists will be invited to guest conduct one of the MDSO cycles, and must be available for a residency at Millikin University during January 29 – February 1, 2020 and/or February 26–29, 2020.
