Position Title: Student Counselor/Social Worker

Department: Student Mental and Behavioral Health Services

FLSA Category: Exempt

Working Relationships:
  • Reports to: Director of Student Mental and Behavioral Health Services
  • Works Closely with: Faculty, Employers, DMH/Millikin Clinic Medical Staff, Student Development Team, and Students
  • Directly Supervises: N/A

Job Summary: The Student Counselor/Social Worker typically oversees a caseload of approximately 100-150 students. The Counselor/Social Worker supports the Director of Student Mental and Behavioral Health Service and other members of the treatment team by coordinating intake, assessment, and treatment; providing proactive follow-up by alerting the treatment team when the student is not improving, supporting medication management, and facilitating communication with members of the treatment team. The Counselor/Social Worker also offers brief counseling (using evidenced-based and trauma informed techniques) and helps facilitate changes in treatment if warranted. As a team member within Student Mental and Behavioral Health Services, the Care Manager is engaged in direct clinical service work up to 75% time.

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Utilizing a trauma-informed approach, provide short-term student, individual counseling, as well as case management and crisis intervention for high need students
  2. Employ assessments to best manage student cases and influence proper referrals
  3. Assist staff in implementation of student conduct related prevention and diversion programs, as well as residential outreach programming related to behavioral health
  4. Support on-call staff and provide after hours on-call support, educational programming, including seminars and workshops to address preventative and developmental needs of students
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Student Mental and Behavioral Health Services to advance the mission of Student Development and student welfare.

Minimum Position Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree in counseling or social work is required, as well as clinical licensure in Illinois at the LCPC/LCSW is preferred
  • Excellent clinical skills for diverse and high stress populations
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention and management
  • In-depth understanding of the changing demographics and behavioral health needs of college students and adolescents
  • Excellent communication skills and a good understanding of cross-cultural communication
  • Experience with alcohol and other drug treatment and programming.

Other Skills Preferred:
  • Experience in the development and creation of innovative student service programs
  • Demonstrated understanding and strong commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Experience in academic plans and working with students with disabilities
  • Ability to work in partnership with staff, faculty, administrators, and student leaders
  • Understanding of student development with competence in departure theory, involvement theory, and other student development theories
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and reprioritize projects as needed
