The CU Denver campus has seven schools and colleges offering more than 140 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.  The Anschutz Medical Campus has five schools and colleges offering two undergraduate degrees, 36 graduate degrees, and five first-professional programs.  In addition, the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus has a single Graduate School serving both campuses.

The School:The CU Denver Business School is a comprehensive business school and a leader in business education and research.  It is fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).  Composed of several degree and emphasis options (Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Energy Management, Finance, Financial Management, Health Administration, Human Resources, Information Systems, International Business, Management, Marketing, Risk Management and Insurance, Sports and Entertainment Management, and Taxation) the school offers 11 different undergraduate business administration majors, 15 different MBA/Master’s degrees, and one joint PhD program (offered with the College of Engineering, Design and Computing).  The CU Denver Business School is the largest accredited business school in Colorado and has seen steadily increasing national recognition for its undergraduate business programs, innovative cross-disciplinary programs, and community and industry engagement.  It has expanded its global footprint with the launch of online, hybrid, professional MBA, and combined MBA/MS programs.  It also offers an executive MBA option in collaboration with the Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses.

The Location:
The Business School is located in the heart of downtown Denver.  The CU Denver campus is situated in one of America’s most vibrant urban centers, having access to a wide array of academic, professional, recreational, and cultural outlets.  The Anschutz Medical Campus in nearby Aurora features world-class research, educational, and clinical space.  That site also hosts the University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Denver Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, and a bioscience research park.

The Business School occupies a recently renovated 120,000-square-foot building in the heart of downtown Denver, located within walking distance of Fortune 500 companies and other local businesses.  The sustainable design of the building connects the iconic scenery of the West to the urban energy of downtown Denver.  The building holds 20 classrooms and seminar rooms featuring the latest integrated technology, and hosts global business leaders at speaking engagements, forums and other events that bring business professionals, student and faculty together in a collaborative learning space.

Enrollment:The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus serves more than 19,000 students annually via on-site and off-site courses.  The student body is diverse; 37 percent are students of color and 6 percent of students on the Denver Campus are the first generation in their families to attend college.  The Business School enrollment totals more than 2,400 students, 36% are students of color.

Faculty and Staff:
The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus employs approximately 6,000 faculty and 6,300 staff, Residents, and Professional Research Assistants.  Its distinguished faculty hold many national and international honors and awards.  The Dean of the Business School works with approximately 46 tenured and tenure track faculty, 64 non-tenure-track faculty, and 57 administrative and support staff.

Nature of Work:
The Dean of the Business School, reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, is responsible for serving as the chief academic officer of the school with full responsibility for its academic programs and curricula, the school’s budget, outreach and engagement with the business community, and development activities.  In collaboration with the faculty, the Dean will provide intellectual leadership and a strong commitment to the School’s undergraduate and graduate programs.  The Dean is expected to increase the school’s resource base by leading fundraising activities for the school, in partnership with an advancement officer.  The Dean will also:  strengthen engagement of and collaborations with industry and business partners; increase the amount and visibility of scholarship (research/creative work) activity of the faculty; work to promote transformation, innovation and entrepreneurial activities that will prepare the school well for the future; lead the development of strategies to increase enrollments, improve retention and enhance the student experience including internships and other experiential learning activities;  foster a climate that demonstrates a commitment to diversity and inclusion; develop a strong alumni network in conjunction with an enhanced focus on job placement; and demonstrate a strong commitment to the university’s urban location while exploring opportunities to engage across Colorado and around the globe.

Professional Field:
This position requires an earned terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the academic programs of the Business School and successful leadership experience.  A record of scholarship, teaching and service sufficient to be appointed to a faculty position as a professor with tenure at the University of Colorado Denver is preferred.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated senior-level leadership success at a research university and/or sustained executive-level success in business or industry.  Nontraditional applicants with significant business experience, exceptional leadership skills and a demonstrated commitment to higher education are encouraged to apply.

Supervision Received:
Appointed by the Chancellor on the recommendation of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean reports directly to the Provost.  The responsibilities assigned to this position are by broad directive and generally accomplished without direct supervision.  The Dean’s performance in this position is judged holistically—by the quality of overall results rather than by conforming to pre-established specific standards.

Supervision Exercised:
This position will supervise all faculty and staff within the school.

Examples of Work Performed:
The Dean serves as the chief academic and financial officer of the school with full responsibility for its academic programs and their curricula, the Business School budget, and its outreach, engagement and development activities.  The Dean must effectively and meaningfully engage the business community.

The Dean’s responsibilities include (not in priority order):
  • Create a new strategic vision for the School that reflects its urban location;
  • In collaboration with the faculty, providing intellectual leadership and a strong commitment to the educational programs housed in the Business School;
  • Working with the faculty to continuously improve the teaching/learning programs and environment of the school while providing students with affordable access to career-oriented skills for successful careers;
  • Working in consultation with the Provost and in collaboration with other Deans to ensure a university-wide perspective on broad institutional matters;
  • Increase the school’s resource base by engaging in fundraising activities for the school, working collaboratively with the University of Colorado Advancement team;
  • Building networks and strengthening alliance-building with industry and business partners;
  • Encouraging greater scholarship (creative work/research) activity involving both undergraduate and graduate students in externally-funded and campus-supported efforts;
  • Overseeing the activities necessary to maintain the school’s AACSB accreditation;
  • Working to promote scholarship (creative work/research), innovation and entrepreneurial activities in the school and raising its stature and funding;
  • Advocating for the school internally as well as statewide, nationally and internationally;
  • Leading efforts/activities to enhance the student experience and advance enrollments, diversity and inclusion, and retention and persistence efforts among the school’s students, staff, and faculty;
  • Lead efforts to expand internships and job placement for graduates;
  • Providing outstanding strategic leadership and critically evaluating/embracing emerging directions in higher education, industry, business, and the technology spheres;
  • Meeting agreed-on objectives for the school within the established budget;
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to the university’s urban location and to the rich diversity of the urban environment, while exploring opportunities to engage across Colorado and around the globe; and,
  • Enhancing the Business School brand through activities, events, and intellectual leadership in the business and government communities.

  • Experience with CRM systems and data driven decision making specific to enrollment and marketing;

  • Earned terminal degree in an area relevant to the academic programs in the Business School;
  • Evidence of ability to forge partnerships, raise funds, and partner with industry and business to meet strategic growth and development goals; and,
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills; ability to motivate and manage change, energize, and lead a committed faculty and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Record of scholarship, teaching and service sufficient to be appointed as a professor with tenure at the University of Colorado Denver;
  • Demonstrated senior-level leadership success at a research university and/or sustained executive-level success in business or industry;
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment and accomplishment in building diversity and inclusion;
  • Understanding of the challenges of business education in an increasingly competitive and technologically diverse environment; and,
  • Prior success in the areas of business innovation, entrepreneurship, global learning, and the use of technology in the higher education environment.
