The Research Assistant Professor position will contribute to the integrated research land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. The position may be continued beyond the first year dependent upon grant funding availability and satisfactory performance.

The incumbent will conduct multi-location studies of different scenarios of cover crop management; evaluate the impact of cover crops on crop yields, soil physical processes, water use efficiency, carbon and nutrient pools, greenhouse gas emissions, and overall soil health parameters; be involved in experiments of crop residue management, conservation tillage, intensified cropping systems, and dedicated bioenergy crop; participate in external and internal grant writing for research activities; assist with Soil Physics Lab management; collaborate with other University of Nebraska scientists and colleagues at other institutions to strengthen research programming; assist and mentor graduate and under graduate students in the research group; publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities; and contribute to peer reviewed publications. The incumbent must have at least three years of experience with management strategies of cover crops in irrigated and rainfed systems in the Great Plains. The incumbent must also have at least 3 years of experience with field and laboratory characterization of soil physical and hydraulic properties under cover crops and other management practices. Collaboration with other scientists, students, farmers and farm groups is essential.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in Soil Science.
2. Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
3. Minimum 3 years experience with management strategies of cover crops in irrigated and rainfed systems in the Great Plains.
3. Minimum 3 years experience with field laboratory characterization of soil physical and hydraulic properties under cover crops and other management practices.
4. Collaboration with other scientists, students, farmers and farm groups is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Familiar with modeling of cover crop biomass production.
2. Familiar with the economic analysis of cover crops.
3. Interest in co-teaching soil courses.
4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
