Nature of WorkThe Financial & Business Analyst position is responsible for providing overall financial management and business analytics support to the Senior Director of Budget and Finance Administration of the Office of Digital Education and CU South Denver at the University of Colorado Denver.  This position is located at CU South Denver in Lone Tree, CO, with occasional travel to CU Denver and CU Anschutz medical campuses.  The position reports directly to the Senior Director of Budget and Finance Administration.
The financial & business analyst will have primary responsibility for new online program pro forma financial model development for individual academic programs, which requires close collaboration with other Office of Digital Education teams including Instructional Design & Faculty Training and Support, Marketing, Recruitment, and Student Success, as well as academic partners on both campuses. The position’s analytical work covers a broad range of financial issues and subjects pertaining to budgeting, financial planning, data-driven decision-making, and metric reporting activities.  This is a lead position with subject matter expertise that will make recommendations to senior leadership in the university.  
Examples of Work Performed
  • Create individual online program pro forma financial models through collaborative work with the Office of Digital Education teams and engaging with academic partners.  
  • Evaluate financial viability of new or re-launched programs and recommend strategies for improvement of financial outcomes. 
  • Responsible for complex data and spreadsheet management and leading key cross-functional meetings to produce final deliverables. 
  • Ongoing tracking of individual online program financial and enrollment performance over time, and reporting cost metrics and other results.
  • Conduct financial analysis, cash flow analysis, and financial model development for a variety of university programs and services at CU South Denver and the Office of Digital Education. Determine the methodology; identify data sources; collect, analyze, format and present the data to appropriate audiences. 
  • Develop materials, reports, schedules, charts and graphs by analyzing historical data, trends and metrics. Provide relevant, timely and accurate financial reports, presentations, and dashboards to inform decision-making, policy refinement, and planning.
  • Support the departments’ annual budget development and strategic planning processes by tying organizational metrics back to budget and financial plan.
  • Assist with special studies, scenario analysis, cost estimating, or other financial analysis projects.
  • Accounting and budget support may include budget-to-actual reporting, fund reconciliation, revenue estimating, budget analysis, journal entries, procurement and/or purchasing duties, and assisting with month- and year-end close procedures. 
  • Understand and apply all university fiscal rules and financial management principles.
  • Understand complexities all fund sources including State General Fund, Tuition, Fees, Auxiliaries, grants and research, gifts, and all others.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous process improvement and innovative solutions and communicate these to supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the overall budget and finance team.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications – Principal Financial & Business Analyst
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, public policy/administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • 4+ years of experience with advanced financial data analysis, financial modeling, and presenting quantitative information. 
  • At least 1 year of experience with online education pro forma financial model development.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel experience (dashboards, charts, graphs, pivot tables and formulas such as v-lookups, sum-ifs, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications – Senior Financial & Business Analyst
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, public policy/administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • 3+ years of experience with advanced financial data analysis, financial modeling, and presenting quantitative information. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel experience (dashboards, charts, graphs, pivot tables and formulas such as v-lookups, sum-ifs, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in business, finance, economics, public policy/administration or a closely related field.  
  • Working knowledge of and experience with Tableau and Salesforce.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting, preferably with online degree programs.
  • Experience in project management working in a cross-functional environment.
  • Experience with process improvement, benchmarking, and metric reporting.
  • Familiarity and experience with relational database concepts.
Competencies
  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft or other Oracle-based financial system experience. 
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in working within a General Ledger accounting system. 
  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting, preferably in a state or university setting.  
  • Understanding of public higher education policies and issues. 
  • Expertise in financial analysis, including forecasting, economic analysis, data mining, econometrics, and/or modeling to build financial models and inform decision making.  
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills, proven ability to review and analyze financial data and explain results to senior management. 
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically in order to solve problems and drive competitive advantage related to the University’s goals around the online and adult learner populations and to serve the needs of the business community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution; ability to work cooperatively with various organizations to communicate financial information.

  • Demonstrated competence in the use of MS Office applications, particularly MS Excel and MS Access, for spreadsheets, statistical analysis, graphics, and decision support.  
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage interrelated and/or complex issues or transactions.  
  • Ability to take direction and work through projects independently or collaboratively.  
  • Ability to evaluate policies and exercise good judgment in the interpretation and application of procedures and rules.  
  • Ability to query, analyze, and manipulate financial data from a variety of sources.
