Clinical Research Librarian – Librarian Assistant or Librarian Associate Professor

The University of Miami Libraries invites applications for the position of Clinical Research Librarian to support the library’s mission of connecting people with knowledge and information to make informed health care decisions.

As a key member of the Learning, Research, and Clinical Information Services Team, this librarian will collaborate with colleagues across the libraries and campuses to advance our clinical research liaison programs and will engage in campus-wide transformative efforts to foster interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.

This position will provide clinical information, education, and research services using various methods and technologies; will respond to complex search requests in health subject areas; and will advise patrons on information sources, data management, scholarly communications, and library services. As a member of the Library’s systematic review service, the Clinical Research Librarian will offer consultation, literature searching, and co-authoring of manuscripts. This position is also responsible for initiating and participating in research and scholarly activities and other library projects that directly inform clinical practice or support new and ongoing funded research.

The Clinical Research Librarian will participate in medical library professional organizations locally, regionally and nationally, and pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional service activities in order to meet criteria for promotion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Conducts expert searches and literature reviews for patrons from health disciplines.
  • Conducts in-depth instruction on expert searching, systematic reviews, practice guidelines, evidence synthesis or consensus statements in collaboration with colleagues across the libraries and campuses.
  • Provides instruction through workshops, course sessions, and online modules on database searching, research design, and scholarly communication methods to patrons from health disciplines.
  • Collaborates with Medical School faculty to integrate critical thinking, critical appraisal of the literature, and information and digital literacy in the curricula;
  • Participates on interdisciplinary research teams and assists faculty in disseminating research and instruction to serve the university’s research mission.
  • Assists patrons in effective selection and use of information tools and resources, and aids patrons in the management of research results in reference management tools.
  • Pursues professional development, professional service activities, and publication as guided by the University Libraries’ Bylaws.
  • Represents the Library in University-wide activities and in other venues, participates in other Library activities in support of the University Libraries’ mission, and serves the university community.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library science program or ALA approved foreign equivalent.
  • Minimum of three-years experience in an academic health science library located in a healthcare setting or comparable experience.
  • Experience in expert literature searching, and writing publications.
  • Proficiency with at least one reference management tool.
  • Evidence of extensive knowledge of medical terminology, biomedical information resources and other healthcare databases.
  • Documented experience synthesizing and interpreting evidence based research.
  • Documented experience in designing and developing technology based instructional materials.
  • Ability to plan projects, take initiative, and meet deadlines.
  • Documented ability to thrive in a team-based environment and work collaboratively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to teach effectively in a variety of settings to a variety of audiences.

Preferred:

  • Education or work experience in a health discipline.
  • Experience in expert searching for meta-analysis, systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines and other research documents.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse educational and professional environment and demonstration of the ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

THE LIBRARIES: The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu) rank among the top research libraries in North America with a collection of over 3.6 million volumes and 95,631 current serials titles, including 93,682 electronic journals. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the center of the Coral Gables campus and serves as the central library for the University.

The Louis Calder Memorial Library is located on the UM medical campus near downtown Miami, approximately 8 miles from Coral Gables. Its staff of 24 primarily serves the Miller School of Medicine’s educational and biomedical research programs, and UM’s clinical enterprise, UHealth. Library services are also provided to the Medical School’s primary teaching hospital, which shares a campus with the Miller School. The Miller School of Medicine’s regional campus is located in Boca Raton, Florida.

Other University of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Library. The University has an independent law library. The Libraries provide support and services for approximately 11,273 undergraduates, 5,501 graduate students, and 13,576 full and part time faculty and staff. Excluding the independent libraries, the University Libraries employ 68 professional and 80 support staff and are a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, CRL, NERL, OCLC Research Library Partners, HathiTrust, APTrust, DPN, SEFLIN and Lyrasis.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a non-tenure track faculty appointment at the Librarian Assistant or Associate Professor rank.
