Description

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (C&EE), in the Samueli School of Engineering at UCLA, invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position. We seek a bold, innovative thinker who is, or soon will be, a leading scholar of transportation engineering. While we are open to applicants in all areas of transportation engineering, we are especially interested in those who will contribute to the strengths and strategic priorities of the Samueli School, the Institute of Transportation Studies, and the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department. These priorities currently emphasize Sustainable and Resilient Transportation Systems and Infrastructure, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption, transportation system resilience, intelligent and sustainable infrastructure, and inter-city transportation infrastructure.

This position is a key element of an expanding transportation systems footprint in Samueli Engineering, and across the UCLA campus. We seek candidates keen to lead the expansion and integration of transportation-related teaching and research in Samueli Engineering with the nearly four dozen transportation scholars and multiple transportation degree and research programs across UCLA.

Los Angeles is a global city renowned for its dynamism, robust economy, rich cultural diversity, and spectacular climate. UCLA was recently ranked as the #1 public university in the U.S. by US News & World report, and the successful candidate for this position will enjoy this rich scholarly environment as well as research support from at least five campus research centers: the Institute of Transportation Studies, Smart Grid Energy Research Center, Luskin Center for Innovation, Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences, and Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies.

The generously endowed Samueli School of Engineering is home to the departments of Bioengineering, Chemical & Biomolecular, Civil & Environmental, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, where this position will be housed, currently hosts 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 4 affiliated and joint tenured/tenure-track faculty, and 7 adjunct faculty with diverse expertise. The department and Samueli Engineering are committed to developing a strong teaching and research presence in transportation engineering, beginning with this position.

UCLA offers competitive salary and attractive benefits packages, including a housing assistance program for new faculty members. All applicants should hold a PhD at the time of appointment and demonstrate exceptional promise for scholarship and teaching. Applicants and appointments at all levels (assistant, associate, and full) will be considered. The expected start date is in the summer of 2020.

To assure full consideration, applications should be submitted by December 15, 2019. The position will remain open until filled.
