MEAM Tenured and Tenure-track Positions 2020

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Open Date:
Nov 7, 2019
Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics within the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania seeks outstanding applicants for tenure-track assistant professors. In exceptional cases, applicants for tenured associate and full professorships will also be considered.

We seek applicants with exceptional research achievements and future promise who will take a position of international leadership in defining their field of study. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work is at the intersection of mechanical engineering and computational science. This includes research in computation that is connected to multiple areas of mechanical engineering, such as, but not limited to, design and optimization, mechanics, manufacturing, robotics and controls, fluids, thermal sciences, and health and medicine.

Candidates must have a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education in mechanical engineering, and a dedication to service, collegiality, and fostering a culture of inclusion. We seek to enrich the diversity of the Department, and so candidates from groups underrepresented in mechanical engineering are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants' training and future research must be strongly rooted in mechanical engineering and should couple with at least one of the department's core disciplinary strengths in robotics and mechanical systems, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, and thermal sciences.

The Department maintains close collaborations with all other engineering departments and other Schools at Penn including the School of Arts and Sciences, the Perelman School of Medicine, the Wharton School of Business, and the Stuart Weitzman School of Design. Our faculty engage with leading centers including the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing, and Perception (GRASP) Laboratory, the Penn Institute for Computational Science (PICS), the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM), the Penn Center for Health, Devices & Technology, and the Center for Engineering Mechanobiology. The Department encourages candidates who can leverage and add to these relationships.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Application Instructions:

Applications must be submitted online via Interfolio. Applications must include a cover letter (up to 2 pages), Curriculum Vitae, teaching statement (up to 2 pages), research statement (up to 4 pages, with an abstract of up to 300 words), names and contact information of 3 references, and up to 4 representative publications. The deadline for applications is Jan. 7, 2020. Review of applications will begin immediately, so we encourage early submission.

Vision

As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.

Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
