General Description
Plan and provide specialized nursing care for patients in the ambulatory clinics and surgery settings as established within the Nursing Clinical Ladder Program. Participates in educational activities, departmental committees, quality improvement projects and other operational support projects as assigned. Provides nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Job Duties
1. Uses the Nursing Process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the needs of the multi-specialty clinic and surgery patients. Properly document and communicate nursing actions and patient responses in health system EMR.
2. Delivers patient care according to standards of the clinic, peri-operative and pre-screening areas. Provides patient/significant other education and staff education to address the needs of the specific patient populations seen at the center.
3. Participates in the development of standards of care in the clinic, peri-operative and pre-screening areas. Provides patient/significant other education and staff education to address the needs of the specific patient populations seen at the center.
4. Appraises quality and effectiveness of supplies and equipment. Provides direction and guidance in proper use, care and control of material resources.
5. Anticipates potential safety concerns in the environment of care and infection control. Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes surgical instruments for procedures. Provides safe environment of care.
6. Participates in all staff educational opportunities, in-services, and demonstrates annual competency for nursing skills related to the multiple areas of patient care throughout the clinic (clinic, preop, periop, postop, triage)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and all unlicensed assistive personnel Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedures
Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families
Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others
Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care
Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up
Ability to use fine motor skills
Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area or organization
Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
Ability to use the computer and learn new software programs
Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools
Ability to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients
Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
Ability to remain focused and organized Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to ambulatory patients
Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions
Working knowledge and completion of appropriate TJC and other regulatory requirements

Education Requirements/Preferences
Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN or Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program. All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date. PALS and ACLS certification preferred or must complete within the first 90 days of employment.

Experience Requirements/Preferences
Requires two years of appropriate clinical experience. Previous operating room experience (sterile technique, scrub, preop, pacu, circulator preferred)

Licensure/Certification Requirements
Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus
