The Clinical Trials groups within Cardiology bridges the realm of bench science with that of daily clinical care rendered to patients within our healthcare system. Through clinical trials, its principal investigators and trials staff provide the mechanism for the collection of data to determine the efficacy and safety of new pharmaceuticals and devices. Trial recruitment and management is critical to the success of the program, and relies heavily on the independent work of study coordinators. Ethical considerations must be paramount as our first priority is patient safety- therefore there are significant regulatory requirements (internal to the university, as well as to numerous external agencies).
There are two distinct groups managing clinical trials within Cardiology – heart failure and general cardiology. In addition, several faculty members’ work on investigator-initiated research, employing clinical and administrative staff, interns, and work study students to assist. The heart failure clinical trials group manages a complex array of industry, NIH, and investigator-initiated trials.

Position DescriptionThe Cardiology Clinical Trials Research Assistant (Social/Clinical Research Assistant) will support work in research related to congestive heart failure. The Research Assistant has several job functions related to clinical trials: database management, facilitating coordination and execution of multi-site trials, patient screening, recruitment, and tracking of clinical trial activity. Facilitation of patient enrollment in trials will be a major focus. With direction, the Research Assistant will assist the supervisor in IRB processing and manage regulatory documentation of current and historical trials.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsBachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesMust be well organized with an attention to detail.
Excellent communication and customer service skills are essential in dealing with various internal and external entities.
High level of organizational skills, specifically with electronic files.
High level of efficiency and ability to self-start is key.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Working knowledge of medical terminology.
Prefer candidates who have knowledge and expertise with medical terminology that is particularly related to cardiovascular disease and heart failure.
Prefer candidates who have expertise with Microsoft Word, specifically track changes functionality, and Microsoft Excel (formulas, logical statements, conditional formatting.)

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
