About the positionThe Long Laboratoryat Stanford University School of Medicine Department of Pathology and StanfordChEM-H (https://longlabstanford.org/) seeks one research associate (LSRP2) toperform experiments as part of a team of investigators studying the mammalian energymetabolism. Energetic, bright, and highly motivated candidates with backgroundsin biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, bioengineering, orphysiology are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidates willwork directly with the principal investigator and a team of investigators, belisted as co-authors on published work, and gain valuable bench-side experiencein a fast-paced research environment. Full training for all responsibilitieswill be provided. We encourage applications who are willing to take onchallenging learning opportunities. Specific responsibilities include: performexperiments; participate in team meetings for experimental planning and review;document, compile, and analyze experimental data; troubleshoot; provide oraland written reports of experiments; generate constructs and cell lines;genotype and maintain mouse colonies; and provide support with generallaboratory maintenance and compliance with health and safety policies.

DESIREDQUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experiencewith and ability to learn new technical and computational approaches.
  • Experiencewith basic rodent handling and animal husbandry
  • Takeinitiative to recognize and fill areas in the lab that need improvement
  • Theoreticalknowledge of basic cell biology, biochemistry, or physiology.
  • Abilityto communicate effectively with people of all technical and scientificbackgrounds.
  • Excellentorganizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Experiencewith tissue culture and basic molecular cell biology techniques.
  • Excellenttime management skills.
  • Independentthought and judgement.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE(REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree in related scientific fieldand two years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a relatedscientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLSAND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Comprehensive understanding ofscientific principles.
  • General computer skills and abilityto quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientificapplications.
  • Strong analytical skills andexcellent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain detailedrecords of experiments and outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlineswith general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills anddemonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist,bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully,perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry,push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl,reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop,chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision toperform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel,stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eighthours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objectsweighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty,and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKINGCONDITIONS:

  • May require working in closeproximity to blood borne pathogens.
  • May require work in an environmentwhere animals are used for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times require theemployee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/orinfectious diseases are present.
  • Employee must perform tasks thatrequire the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses andshoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusualwork hours based on research requirements and business needs.
