Job Description

The focus of the search is for candidates engaged in the study of Wildlife Biology, particularly with a focus on both biotic and abiotic factors affecting conservation and stewardship of mammals or birds. Candidates working with taxa native to Central or South Texas will be favored. Experience with threatened or endangered species, as well as experience with wildlife policy and law, are requirements. The successful candidate will have published in peer-reviewed scholarly discipline ­appropriate journals, obtained significant grant funding as principle investigator and/or co-Pl, and have held a full-time postdoctoral or faculty position with teaching responsibilities. Ability to multi­task and work cooperatively with others, strong self-discipline and ability to work independently, strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, and the ability to interact with students at both undergraduate and graduate levels is required. The selected candidate must show evidence of broad training in wildlife biology and must also have experience teaching the following types of courses: Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Ecology, and General Biology for majors. Other courses of interest are Mammalogy and Ornithology. The selected candidate must also show evidence of working with a diverse student body. Job responsibilities of a tenure-track position at A&M-SA include teaching biology courses at undergraduate through graduate levels, conducting scientific research in a shared laboratory environment, inclusion of undergraduates in research, manuscript writing, grant proposal writing, and service to the program, department, college; university, community, and the profession.

Review of applications will begin 2 January, 2019, and continues until the position is filled.

Responsibilities:

• Teach the equivalent of 18 course credits between fall-spring semesters.
• Teach biology courses at undergraduate through graduate levels.
• Help equip and manage a new laboratory.
• Initiation and management of an externally-funded research program.
• Publications in peer reviewed research journals in the candidate's field of interest.
• Service and committee work at the program, department, college, university, community, and profession levels.
• A Driver's license is required since it is an essential function as frequent site investigations and stakeholder engagement activities are expected for the position.

Education:

• Ph.D. in biology, or a closely related field of study (ABDs will not be considered for this position).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience with endangered species
• Understanding of wildlife policy and law
• Biotic and abiotic factors affecting wildlife conservation and stewardship of mammals or birds
• Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
• Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently.
• Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
• Ability to interact with students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
