Job Description Summary

The Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University launched in August 2017 and
seeks an Engineering Lab and Studio Manager to assist with designing and operating academic spaces for
teaching and research. The Lab Manager will be expected to manage spaces, equipment, and people (e.g.
students) necessary to support a range of engineering projects.

Job Description

The new Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University seeks an Engineering Lab and Studio Manager to help design and build a modern and experiential undergraduate engineering program by working with students and faculty in a variety of engineering projects and lab experiences related to both teaching and research efforts. We strive to be a leader in undergraduate education with primary motivations being innovation in the curriculum, effective learning methods, an authentic liberal arts education educating the whole person, and a project-based curriculum emphasizing creative design and community partnerships. Because the Department of Engineering and its student body are in the founding phase, applicants should be prepared for and excited about the unique opportunities and challenges that this startup process entails. A successful applicant could start as early as January 1, 2020. Essential Functions of the Engineering Lab and Studio Manager:

● Maintain accurate and complete budgetary records and inventories for labs and studios. Organization and documentation are critical as the Department builds out and works to create a strong foundation from which to grow.

● Collaborate with faculty and students to specify, purchase, and organize equipment, furniture, tools, and supplies for engineering learning spaces and laboratories.

● Responsible for safety training and compliance for spaces and personnel through WFU Environmental Health & Safety and external entities as necessary.

● Coordinate planning, maintenance, and repair for functional equipment in engineering learning spaces.

● Assist in facilities planning as well as identifying available and suitable spaces for engineering courses and short-term projects.

● Oversee or support the management of an engineering makerspace and machine shop, as well as the training of student assistants, in order for the space to be accessible to all WFU students, faculty, and staff.

● Support the department in planning for new spaces and required furniture and equipment.

● Consult with vendors on new products and benchmark programs at peer institutions to keep upto-date on the latest technologies and techniques in engineering. .

● Train and supervise undergraduate students as lab and studio assistants.

● Assist with design of new experiments and project experiences for undergraduate courses.

● Periodically provide training workshops for students and faculty to learn new equipment or tools.

● Support hardware and software for various laboratories, including 3D modeling and other prototyping/fabrication equipment and data acquisition equipment/systems, etc.

● Work with property management personnel to report building maintenance issues.

● Mentor engineering students and help them develop "hands-on" technical skills.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● A bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical or related field, and work experience in an industrial or academic setting.

● Ability to work with students, faculty and professionals from a range of backgrounds.

● Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.

● Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

● Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new situations and department needs.

● Ability to maintain, repair, or troubleshoot equipment in engineering teaching and research labs.

● Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and online ordering programs.

● Moderate physical activity including unloading inventory and standing for long periods of time.

Accountabilities: Works independently. Reports to Department Chair. Hiring, training, and supervision of student assistants. Future supervision of professional staff as necessary. Operate within department budget for labs and studios, maintain accurate records of all expenditures and inventories.
