The Associate Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Community Relations works closely with the President and other university leaders to create and implement a strategic plan that strengthens Texas Southern University’s ties with local, state, and federal government, the private sector, the local community and other political arenas for the benefit of increased funding, visibility, and viability of the institution. Also, actively forges and maintains relationships with key political and community figures who have key interests in the sustainability and advancement of higher education.
Essential Duties SummaryMonitors political trends, legislation, policies, issues etc., relative to higher education within local, state, and national governmental agencies. Works with the President to develop and implement an ongoing legislative strategic plan. Builds relationships on behalf of the University with local, state, federal elected/appointed officials and other relevant institutions/community organizations and leaders. Briefs University administrators and members of the Board of Regents on legislative hearings, committee meetings, and briefings. Possesses strong verbal and written skills to communicate reports and generate findings via deliverables. Serves as liaison and resource for assistance in finding solutions to political matters that impact Texas Southern University. Coordinates special projects and activities geared toward enhancing understanding of and fostering commitments to the University’s legislative funding priorities. Provides leadership in development and maintenance of strategic relationships with various community leaders in the areas of civic, grassroots, social services, political, and religious communities. Represents TSU in a leadership capacity on the local, state, and national levels of policy-making boards/committees as well as within industry organizations. Designs, implements and maintains a system for ensuring compliance with key laws and regulations governing colleges and universities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Has human resources responsibilities and authority to hire, discipline and terminate staff. This position typically reports to a senior executive.

Personally ensures problem resolution. Identifies barriers to effective customer service and sets customer service standards. Establishes a customer feedback system and holds self accountable for customer service excellence within the department or program.
Working/Environmental ConditionsWork is performed within routine office environment with no exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions. Physical demands are usually limited to sitting or standing in one location much of the time. Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects of light weight may be required.
