The primary purpose of the auditor position is to conduct operational, compliance, financial, and special audits or consultations with the objectives of providing assurance that:

-Internal controls are adequate and effective
-Operations promote efficiency and compliance with policies, applicable laws
and regulations
-Assets of the university are properly protected

The Office of Internal Audit also provides routine consultation and advisory services to university departments. This may include but is not limited to interpreting policies and procedures, participating on standing committees, completing limited-life projects, attending ad-hoc meetings, and completing
routine information exchange.

N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or discipline related to the program area, with nine credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
As per General Statute: 143-746
( c ) Appointment and Qualifications of Internal Auditors. – Any State employee who performs the internal audit function shall meet the minimum qualifications for internal auditors established by the Office of State Personnel, in consultation with the Council of Internal Auditing. The required education and experience requirements are:

Internal Auditor Journey:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a discipline related to the program area assigned and two years of related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in any field and certification/licensure as a certified public accountant, certified internal auditor, certified fraud examiner, certified information system auditor or related certification or licensure and two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position

-Ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, and regulations and ability
to test conformance to those standards
-Knowledge of accounting theory and systems accounting
-Familiarity with and ability to apply Generally Accepted Auditing Standards
-Knowledge of the International Professional Practices Framework developed by the Institute of Internal Auditors
-Knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and law
-Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data, evaluating information and systems, and drawing logical conclusions
-Experience in planning and project management, and in maintaining composure under pressure while meeting multiple deadlines
-Ability to negotiate issues and resolve problems
-Proficiency with using Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and SharePoint
-Strong and effective verbal and written communications
-Ability to establish, cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, staff, faculty, students, and external contacts

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

Previous experience in auditing or higher education

Relevant professional certifications (CPA, CIA, CISA, CFE)

Experience using data analytics and data visualization tools

Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position

Per General Statute 143-739, Internal Auditors must have one of the following:

Certification or licensure as a:
-Certified public accountant
-Certified internal auditor
-Certified fraud examiner
-Certified information system auditor
-Professional engineer
-Attorney

OR

Graduation from a four year college or university and a minimum of five years of experience in:
-Internal or external auditing
-Management consulting
-Program evaluation
-Management analysis
-Economic analysis
-Industrial engineering
-Operations research
