Detailed Description:
This is a part-time, temporary position with an anticipated assignment end date of December 6, 2020.

The university seeks an individual with a strong interest in working at a mission driven, faith-based institution. The role of the Registered Nurse in working with students and the responsibilities of the position are significantly tethered in the university's contemporary Roman Catholic mission.

The Registered Nurse provides patient care to students of the University of San Diego at the Student Health Center and performs a variety of medical procedures, assessment, and triage at a skilled professional level. Provides professional nursing functions and support service to the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other RN 's and Medical Assistants by screening patients, and assisting with exams and procedures. Provides general supervision of the clinical practice of medical assistants. Performs related tasks as required.

Periodically, this position may be asked to contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform all routine medical procedures per delineation of privileges.
  • Serves as triage nurse to evaluate the needs of the students presenting in person or by telephone.
  • Works under written standardized protocols for RNs for examining, managing and advising USD students.
  • Advises the Nursing Coordinator, Supervising Physician and/or Director when indicated.
  • Respond to phone calls from students who have medical questions. Follow up on those students who are seriously ill.
  • Care for students requiring first aid and/or routine illnesses not needing a physician or nurse practitioner 's attention.
  • Instruct and prepare patients for examination and diagnostic procedures.
  • Assist in examination and special procedures to include, but not limited to: injections, diagnostic procedures, minor surgery (i.e. suturing, removal of stitches), and other special tasks.
  • Assist and/or implement the referral process, provide patient education, advise patient on self-care, needed follow up and suggested behaviors.
  • Perform a variety of license specific nursing procedures at a skilled professional level, to include (but not limited to) wound care, dressing changes, pulmonary treatments, peak flow monitoring, venipuncture, urinalysis, suture removal, IV starts, and ear lavage.
  • Monitor lab work and special studies to include advising patients of lab results after the appropriate medical practitioner approval and advisement or as directed by standing orders.
  • Maintain the stock, cleanliness and utility of exam rooms, equipment and work areas. Must assure the sterility and safe handling of supplies and equipment. Is responsible for the maintenance of properly functioning equipment.
  • Ability to handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with speed, accuracy and diplomacy.
  • Know correct procedure for all documentation, work flow processes, including, but not limited to; lab work and log sheets, immunization program, drug screening, and special lab tests.
  • Must assure patient privacy at all times and maintain patient confidentiality. Fully knowledgeable of Federal HIPAA and FERPA requirements.
  • Must assure the protection of self, patients, and co-workers from undue exposure to infectious diseases, contaminated waste and hazardous materials.
  • Blood borne pathogen trained.
  • Assist SHC Director with implementation of immunization program for University of San Diego. Interface with Registrar and Housing in program enforcement.
  • Dispense pre-packaged, labeled, properly identified medications to patient on a patient specific order. Dispense non-prescription meds in accordance with professional guidelines.
  • Familiarized with duties of front office to provide back-up support for Administrative Assistant as needed (i.e. telephone protocol, appointments, computer access etc) to insure smooth operation of Health Center.
  • Participate in weekly QA and educational meetings to be held at the SHC when scheduled.
  • Participate in health-related campus-wide activities such as immunization clinics, health screenings for collegiate athletes, health education seminars for campus life.
  • May function as committee member of interdisciplinary teams with representatives from Athletics, Counseling, Alcohol and Drug Services, and other entities providing for the well-being of students. Attend committee meetings and act as liaison between SHC and wellness committees.

    Job Requirements:
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of approved School of Nursing.
  • Current active California RN licensure.
  • Possession of a current valid CPR certificate is required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Must have broad knowledge base of professional nursing practice, policies and procedures; current knowledge of drug and treatment protocols common to ambulatory care.
  • Ability to perform triage quickly and effectively. One year of professional nursing experience which demonstrates evidence of ability to work independently.

    Special Conditions of Employment:
    Upon hire and throughout employment, must meet the criteria for credentialing and privileging as required by the Student Health Center.

    Tools and Equipment Used:
