This is a 32 hour per week and an academic year position (40 weeks).


Tufts Dining is a self-operated food service providermanaging a comprehensive collegiate food service program on the TuftsUniversity Medford-Somerville campus delivering high quality, contemporary andinnovative food and hospitality services to meet the various needs of students,faculty, staff and visitors in a fiscally responsible manner. Our team operatesa progressive resident dining program for approximately 4000 students as wellas responsive retail services and a distinctive university catering programserving the campus community totaling 5500 undergraduates, 1700 graduatestudents, and 2300 faculty, staff and administrators.


The Service Attendant will demonstrate outstanding serviceto Tufts Dining customers through mastery of a variety of general food serviceand hospitality related tasks. The Service Attendant will understand and beable to communicate the general operations of the unit and seek to assist andaccommodate customers to promote a pleasant dining experience. S/He will havean understanding on customer trends and possess an in-depth understanding ofthe menu and service. The Service Attendant will consistently greet, welcomeand interact with customers in a warm and friendly manner to promote anatmosphere of hospitality and familiarity. S/He will possess a proven abilityto independently and accurately account for meal plan transactions and cashtransactions using the POS system as well as satisfactory interactions withcustomers and guests while working various stations as assigned, utilizing thePOS system to account for a variety of customer transactions. S/He will becomfortable switching from working a POS system to serving customers andworking at a food service station. S/He will be knowledgeable about theingredients and preparation methods of the foods served, especially withregards to the presence of potential allergens. The Service Attendant willprepare, assemble and/or serve various foods and beverages in a professionalmanner. S/He will keep assigned food service stations and storage areasproperly stocked. S/He will set-up and maintain assigned food service stationsthroughout service periods and will assist elsewhere in the unit as customerdemand requires. S/He will break-down, clean and sanitize food service stationsaccording to established procedures throughout the service periods. S/He willset-up and work all food service stations in the unit as required. S/He willassist the culinary staff with basic food service tasks such as carving meats,light cooking and food preparation, garnishing, and food and beveragepreparation.  S/He will assist withsteaming, frying, reheating, grill, garnishing, and food display. S/He willexecute general cleaning tasks in accordance with accepted food servicesanitation standards that are assigned as part of the daily unit housekeepingand sanitation schedules. S/He will execute opening and closing procedures andall other assignments related to delivering an outstanding customerexperience.  S/He will provide tableservice and other related tasks for special events.  S/He will be able to handle cashappropriately, count cash drawer, deposit in accordance to cash handlingprocedures, and operate the department POS system.  S/He will receive and properly store allfood, beverages and supplies in storage areas in a safe, orderly and timelymanner. S/He will present a demonstrated mastery with minimal supervision, willbe able to multi-task during peak and off-peak periods to deliver the highestquality services and will be able to execute assigned tasks with significantindependence.  S/He will engage in jobspecific training and coaching of student workers.

Must demonstrate the ability to work under periods offast pace and high pressure.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: 

  • 1-3 years’ experience in ahigh-volume retail environment as a server, sandwich maker, pizza maker, grillcook or in other dining services positions is required.  

  • Must be able to count money, make change, andoperate POS systems.  

  • Must have 1 year of high-volume cashierexperience and accountability for accurate cash handling.  

  • Must possess outstanding interpersonal skills,an interest in the comfort and welfare of others and must genuinely enjoyinteracting with customers and peers to create a warm and pleasant diningenvironment. 

  • Proven ability to work independently with minimalsupervision.  

  • Should be flexible and willing to learn and executevarious jobs as needed. 

  • Experience interacting with customers and guests in apositive manner.  

  • Must read, speak and understand English and have aworking knowledge of basic food service math.  

  • A team player who iswilling to be held accountable for the quality of products produced by others,for meeting tight deadlines, and for contributing to the success of theoperation.  

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of kitchensanitation and food safety practices and ability to enforce safe food handlingguidelines.

 

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • GED or high schooldiploma.  

  • Experience with a POS system and accurately counting downcash drawers. 

  •  Experience training employees. 

  •  Knowledge offood safety.  Fundamentals of troubleshooting cash registerbasics.  

  • Basic job-related leadership to more junior staff members.
