Position SummaryThe Department of Medicine is seeking a creative, highly skilled financial business oriented individual to join the leadership team. The incumbent will oversee, manage, forecast and plan the internal and external financial and research operations of the Department of Medicine. Manage accounts daily, monthly and annually and assist in planning fiscal activity, financial controls and administrative procedures directly related to operating, clinical, research, endowments, education and contract accounts. Ensure financial activities comply with University fiscal, contract/grant and external agency guidelines. Conducts financial analyses incorporating analytical tools (descriptive analysis, vertical and horizontal analysis, etc.); develop financial/analytical reports that evaluate performance and identifies and implements business solutions to improve performance. Manage department wide research operations; investigate research opportunities for DOM faculty; organize and coordinate resources to assist faculty in preparing internal and external research proposals; create, communicate, manage timely submission of research proposals to CGA, IRB, Business Connect, federal, state, local and non-federal agencies; monitor proposal submission, agency review and award notification; complete research award execution; identify resource requirements, coordinate hiring; and coordinate implementation of funding sources for new research intensive faculty hires. Delivers executive level, high quality and well- organized financial reports in writing and power-point. Participates in and/or manages special projects requiring analysis, development of business solutions and implementation strategies.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a business-related field (accounting) or in a field which corresponds to the particular department of employment; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in finance and accounting procedures and administration, or in performing responsibilities related to the operational activities of the employing unit; experience with word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation software and/or desktop publishing, web page software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired QualificationsThree to five or more years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fund accounting including budgeting, projections, monitoring, maintaining accounts and contract administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; thorough understanding of the accounting systems and the specific income and expense activity within the accounts and resulting reports in order to effectively communicate the relevant historical information and projections; knowledge of accounting tools such as general ledger reports, salary distribution reports and Excel spreadsheets; a keen attention to detail and high degree of accuracy; operational skill with MSU-specific accounting systems such as Kuali Financial Systems, Cognos Business Intelligence and Query Studio; ability to handle requests for payments and reimbursements; ability to complete monthly account reconciliations; ability to process information, data and forms in order to prepare financial reports; experience with University processes and documents; ability to interpret and apply University policies/procedures; knowledge of University structure; effective knowledge and use of computer skills and programs (EXCEL, ACCESS, Quantros, EBS, Business Analytics, Pivot Tables, etc); ability to handle multiple tasks, details, and prioritize work to meet deadlines; demonstrated excellence in communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills and ability to interact with varied constituents in a timely courteous and professional manner; ability to interpret information in order to coordinate projects and respond to questions; demonstrates a work orientation that includes problem solving, teamwork and adaptability to change, focus on service, and continuous learning for self-improvement.
