SUMMARY:

This position is a non-teaching, research only faculty equivalent position. This position begins January 15, 2020.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducting experiments on the culture and differentiation of stem cells in cell culture and the use of these stem cells to repair infarcted heart tissue in mouse and rat animal models of myocardial infarction.
  • The culture and maintenance of stem cell lines along with surgery to induce infarctions in the animal models followed by injection of stem cells to treat and regenerate the damaged areas of the hearts.
  • Morphological and physiological analyses on the treated mice and rats to evaluate the effect of heart repair by the stem cell treatment.
  • Write grants and manuscripts for publication and biosafety and IACUC protocols.
  • Prepare presentations and posters for public presentations of the research at local, regional and national meetings.
  • Working with the administration to order equipment and supplies to carry out the research activities in the laboratory.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate student workers and honors thesis students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Ph.D., M.D., DVM or equivalent degree
  • Experience: Research experience in the areas of cellular biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, or biochemistry. Experience with mammalian tissue culture using sterile techniques. Tissue culture methods and sterile techniques, electrophoresis as applied to Western and Northern blots, immunofluorescent or confocal microscopy, small animal microsurgical experience.
  • Knowledge / Skills: Knowledge of molecular/cellular biological methods such as PCR, electrophoresis, Northern and Western Blots, confocal microscopy and related techniques.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Experience with culturing mammalian embryonic stem cells, confocal microscopy, immunofluorescent microscopy, animal dissection and small animal surgery (mice and rats).

Microinjection of stem cells into heart tissues of mice and rats, microsurgery to create myocardial infarctions in mice and rats, harvesting of tissues and their preparation for histological and immunfluorescent confocal microscopy.
