Geographic Info Systems Specialist 2

The Natural Capital Project

The Natural Capital Project (NatCap) is a partnership of Stanford University's Woods Institute for the Environment, University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment, The Nature Conservancy, the World Wildlife Fund, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Stockholm Resilience Center. We are pioneering science, technology, and partnerships that enable people and nature to thrive. Among other things, we develop and apply tools (including our flagship software, InVEST) to model and map natural capital and the flow of multiple ecosystem services across land- and seascapes. We seek a creative, collaborative, independent and experienced geographic information systems (GIS) professional to work with an interdisciplinary team based at Stanford University, applying InVEST ecosystem service models in our engagements around the world.

The GIS analyst will be the data and modeling expert in a small project team, often participating in several projects at a time. Primarily, this role includes: running InVEST models; compiling and creating input data for these models and related analyses; creating and maintaining spatial databases; contributing maps, graphics, and text for reports and other publications; and presenting findings to stakeholders. Secondary roles include technical support of internal and external InVEST users, interfacing with software developers for tool development, developing geoprocessing scripts to automate workflows, and developing course material and delivering training to practitioners in the use of NatCap's approach and tools. The analyst will work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative team. The position is based at NatCap's offices at Stanford University. It requires excellent technical, organizational, communication, and independent research skills, as well as an aptitude for teamwork and collaboration across disciplines and cultures. The position also involves some travel (typically 4-6 times per year), often to international locations, in order to interface with local partners, stakeholders, researchers, students, and practitioners.

To apply, a cover letter describing how you meet the required and preferred qualifications, as well as a CV or resume are required. If possible, please provide links to examples of geospatial analyses, products or code you have developed. This position is fixed term for one year with possibility of renewal based on performance and programmatic need.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Strong general GIS skills, working with raster, vector and tabular data, in a variety of formats.

  • Demonstrated ability to create geoprocessing scripts and tools to automate workflows

  • Ability to work effectively on multiple concurrent projects

  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with both ArcGIS and QGIS

  • Proficiency in Python and experience with version control

  • Experience applying or developing social or ecological models in the context of natural resource and/or land-use management

  • Experience working with collaborators from diverse backgrounds and capacity to engage with interdisciplinary teams

  • Experience using remote sensing data in analyses

  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus

Job Purpose:
