Louisiana State University invites applications for the position of Vice Provost & Dean of the Graduate School. The Vice Provost & Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice President & Provost, serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the school, and is a member of the Provost’s cabinet. The Vice Provost & Dean exercises ultimate administrative oversight for all aspects of the Graduate School, including strategic planning, fiscal management, personnel development, graduate student support, centralized graduate functions, and communications. This position guides and supports all graduate degree programs and post baccalaureate certificates among the 18 academic colleges/schools, and manages the data collection and analytics for reports on graduate education.

About the Graduate School:

Graduate education is critical to the mission of the University by supporting research and scholarly activity and plays a vital role in meeting skilled workforce demands in Louisiana. As one of the top 60 public research universities in the nation, LSU depends chiefly on two criteria held to be prime indicators that an institution is a major center for the creation of new knowledge: research funding and doctoral education. The synergy between our internationally renowned faculty and our graduate student population helps to keep Louisiana and the nation on the leading edge of discovery. Because of the critical roles that graduate student education and research play in broader enterprise of scholarship at LSU, the Graduate School works closely with the LSU Office Research & Economic Development and its vice president. The Graduate School supports a broad array of graduate degree programs and extensive research and professional development opportunities designed to attract, educate, and graduate highly qualified students. In tandem, it supports faculty who are excellent teacher-scholars, nationally competitive in research and creative activities, and who, together with staff and students, contribute to solving economic, cultural, environmental, educational, and social challenges.

The Graduate School currently serves 4,800 students, of which 1,100 are international students from more than 105 countries. The 22 staff members, two assistant deans, and associate dean report to the Vice Provost & Dean of the Graduate School. The Graduate School also participates in faculty governance through the Graduate Council. The Graduate Council, representing over 1,000 graduate faculty members, is comprised of 17 senior research professors who vote on graduate curriculum change and policies.   

As the state’s center of academic research and advanced studies, the Graduate School administers a more extensive and comprehensive program than any other educational institution in Louisiana. LSU offers doctoral programs in 50 major fields of study. These programs offer opportunities for advanced training and research in all areas of the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Master’s degree programs are offered in 72 major fields. These range from Master of Fine Arts degrees in fields such as creative writing, studio art, and theatre, to professional degree programs in social work, business administration, chemical engineering, and computer science. Graduate Certificates are available in 19 areas of study.

• The College of Science is the top producer of African American PhDs and women PhDs in chemistry in the U.S.
• LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine is one of only 30 accredited colleges of veterinary medicine in the U.S.
• LSU’s master’s degree program in ceramics is ranked seventh overall and fifth among public universities in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best Graduate Schools rankings.
• LSU’s Flores MBA Program is No. 36 among public institutions and No. 69 overall in U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools-Business Schools.”
• The Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture's graduate program is ranked third in the nation by Designlntelligence magazine
• LSU is a member of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), located in Livingston, LA, just 25 miles outside of the LSU campus. LSU faculty, students, and scholars contributed to the detection of gravitational waves and this collaboration led LIGO scholars to be awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics.
• Through the College of Engineering, LSU is the only university in North America where future petroleum engineers can receive hands-on training in oil well control at the Petroleum Engineering Research & Technology Transfer Laboratory.

Position Qualifications:

The successful candidate will demonstrate a distinguished record of scholarly activities that merits appointment at full professor with tenure in their field, proven leadership and management ability, excellent communication skills, commitment to educational quality and scholarly excellence, and a record of working with others collaboratively and of capitalizing on emerging opportunities. The successful candidate will be charged with working jointly with the academic deans to advance graduate education across the entire university and manage the Graduate School staff to ensure efficient and responsive service.
