Job Posting

Henry A. Palmer, Ph.D., served as a beloved professor of pharmacy practice at UConn for nearly 40 years. In 2010, The UConn Foundation established the Henry A. Palmer Endowed Professorship in Community Pharmacy Practice with generous donations from over 225 former students, colleagues, and friends of Dr. Palmer. In 2011, Marie Smith, PharmD, was named the first Palmer endowed professor to support her work in: (1) new and collaborative practice models that integrate pharmacists in primary care medical homes (PCMHs), accountable care organizations (ACOs), and community-health teams; (2) ambulatory care health services research on medication use, quality, and safety; and (3) state and federal-level policy initiatives in health care delivery and practice transformation.

The Palmer Fellowship provides a unique learning experience that allows the fellow to: (1) apply clinical and pharmacy practice knowledge, and (2) make practical contributions to health care delivery change management processes and practice transformation considerations for emerging care delivery models (PCMHs, ACOs, community-based health teams).

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be actively mentored by the fellowship preceptor, Dr. Marie Smith, doing scholarly work to integrate pharmacists within ambulatory or primary care health care teams; advance practical workflows for medication use and safety processes; evaluate the impact of medication management services at the patient and practice-level; and disseminate findings to inform sustainable, evidence-based, medication management practices.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be expected to undertake a wide array of responsibilities with Dr. Smith that include didactic and experiential teaching, practice-based/health services research projects, and health care transformation policy development/evaluation.

Program Components and Schedule

The fellowship requires a commitment of 12 months starting in a July timeframe and will be primarily based in Storrs, CT. The program components and schedule can be tailored to the individual based on their pharmacy training, academic work, prior experience in providing direct patient care; health services research projects; and scholarly work with grants, publications, and presentations. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will engage in study design, protocol management, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparations, as well as formal and informal presentations. Successful completion of the fellowship includes the submission of a manuscript on a fellowship project. The program can include academic courses in health services research, completion of a certificate program in public policy or public health, or skill-development workshops/seminars. Some travel may be required to academic courses or practice-based research sites within the state.

Completion of a PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy; successful completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency (ambulatory care, geriatrics, primary care, or family medicine) or equivalent direct patient care experience; demonstration of strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; demonstration of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; an ability to work on projects independently with attention to deadlines; demonstrated experience of working in a team-based environment and building collegial relationships with mentors, professional colleagues, and students; and be licensed as a pharmacist in Connecticut by July 15, 2020.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a PGY2 residency in ambulatory care, geriatrics, primary care, or family medicine; program implementation experience; management or business administration experience; demonstrated pharmacy practice and scholarship experience in PCMHs or ACOs; prior experience with health services research; scholarly portfolio (publications, presentations, contracts, grants) that demonstrates success in conducting health services research in ambulatory care settings.
