The School of Art at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applications for an Assistant Professor tenure track appointment to start Fall 2020. Seeking a collaborative and energetic artist and educator who will work diligently to create a dynamic program of sculpture at the school of art. The ideal candidate will initiate creative thinking and interdisciplinary practice while demonstrating the capability and understanding of traditional sculptural processes and advanced technologies.

We want to provide our students with the tools necessary for creating artworks while emphasizing concept as the driving force motivating material and formal decisions, process, form, and context as they relate to historical and contemporary sculpture, critical theory, and collaborative practices.

Applicants should have a strong professional record and possess knowledge of a wide variety of multidisciplinary art-making strategies centering on or intersecting with interactive objects/spaces, installation, public art, collaborative projects, digital fabrication, social practice, or other hybrid and emerging art forms.

The candidate must exhibit a mastery of traditional and contemporary sculpture methods that include digital creation and output. You should also have a working knowledge of applicable software.

A strong interest is needed in teaching across the curriculum, as well as an ability to contribute to sculpture and 3D area curriculum development. The ideal candidate will be able to work with undergraduate and graduate students in an interdisciplinary studio art program. The ability to work collegially and productively with others is an essential aspect of the position. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to contribute to an inclusive learning and working environment, as well as cultivate a positive and productive studio culture in and out of the classroom.

The UTRGV School of Art is a bi-campus school which maintains facilities in both Edinburg and Brownsville. In Edinburg it has a 73,000-square foot facility with the highest quality studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and film photography with a wet lab. In Brownsville it has a 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space with very unique 20-foot-high ceilings in all of their studios for optimum student art production in painting, ceramics, sculpture photography (digital and film), printmaking, drawing, an iMac lab for computer imaging and graphics, and a 3000-square foot outdoor open area for experimental art.

UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions, as well as a commitment to UTRGV’s guiding principle(https://www.utrgv.edu/strategic-plan/), which include promoting access to postsecondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.A.

Minimum Qualifications

MFA from an accredited institution.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

—Master of Fine Arts degree with demonstrated professional achievement in the field of sculpture conferred by the time of appointment.
—Teach three courses per semester.
—Possess at least two years of sculpture and/or design experience.
—Extensive knowledge of theory relevant to sculpture and contemporary studio practice.
—Keen eye toward the development of well-crafted sculptural works.
—Desire to mentor exceptional students.
—Ability to foster an active and engaging learning environment.
—Graduate and undergraduate student mentoring and advising, including active participation in B.F.A. and M.F.A reviews as well M.F.A. thesis committees.
—Shared oversight and operation of the Sculpture area including but not limited to overseeing a safe working environment, curriculum development, departmental reviews, executing a budget, managing supplies and equipment, and supervising graduate assistants and work-study students.
—Area representation and recruitment.
—Committee and other service at the School, College, and/or University level.
—Maintain an active and significant research record.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with a potter’s wheel.
—Excellent sketching and visualization capabilities and a strong understanding of prototyping and construction.
—Excellent computer-modeling skills.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

    A New University with a Long History

    The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

     

    Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

     

    UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

    The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

    Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
