Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree and at least one liberal arts degree are preferred. Advising experience or a strong background working with students may override the preference for a Master’s degree. Applicants who have academic advising experience with college-age students are given priority.

Position Summary

This is a full-time position advising undergraduate students in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Advisors work primarily with first- and second-year students. Major areas of responsibility include helping students choose courses and develop academic programs, keeping students informed of graduation requirements, and serving as a resource, i.e., referring students to other campus services when appropriate. Academic advisors are not counselors, but are trained to refer students to health professionals when necessary. Advisors interact with students, advisors, and other staff members. Effective teamwork is important, and excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and listening skills are essential.

An Advisor III has successfully mastered the skills appropriate to the Advisor I and II positions and has the experience and knowledge necessary to take on further responsibilities to support students and the mission of the College. In addition to possessing advanced advising skills and knowledge, an Advisor III must be able and willing to prepare and execute training for new advisors and to oversee a designated group of advisors if asked to do so by the office administration. This position provides leadership for advisors and students and contributes to the administrative functions of the office as determined by the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) coordinator and the Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS) director. Each Lead Advisor III is assigned to work with a specific advising area and advisor group.

Lead Advisor Responsibilities and Administrative Work:
- Respond to student questions and inquiries from prospective students, parents, and others requesting information about Franklin College degrees
-Communicate with Franklin College departments in assigned area and serve as a contact for other advisors and advising offices at UGA with questions related to these departments
- Respond to the needs of fellow leads, coordinators, the office manager, and the OSAS director in relation to assigned area
- Communicate questions and concerns from advisors in assigned advising group to the coordinator, office manager, and director as appropriate
- Serve on hiring committees, especially for assigned area
- Serve as an informal mentor for newer advisors, particularly those in the assigned advising group
- Keep OSAS advisors updated regarding changes in majors in the assigned area that affect Franklin students
- Attend weekly Lead Advisor meetings to discuss issues related to various segments of OSAS and update other Lead Advisors on issues related to assigned area
- Revise materials regarding academic advising for presentation or distribution to students, parents, other UGA offices, and others as needed
- Coordinate drop/add schedules for assigned advising group
- Manage advisor loads and assign students to advisors as necessary

Advise Franklin College Lower-Division Students:
- Advise primarily (but not exclusively) first- and second-year and sophomore students on all USG, UGA, college, and major requirements needed for graduation. Review requirements for minor(s) and/or certificate program(s) and discuss academic issues such as probation/dismissal, academic renewal, and academic honors
- Provide information as needed on pre-professional programs (i.e., pre-law, pre-med), Double Dawgs, and other academic opportunities (Study Abroad, National Student Exchange, scholarships, tutoring services, service-learning courses, writing intensive courses, etc.) and make referrals to appropriate offices
- Create DegreeWorks plans and maintain detailed and accurate notes on student advising appointments in SAGE
- Clear students for registration and determine eligibility for overload if requested
-Provide walk-in times for students who need to speak to an academic advisor

- Update Orientation handouts and PowerPoint presentations for assigned advising group and collaborate with other advisors to prepare these materials
- Coordinate Orientation area meetings for advisors in the assigned advising group to ensure full coverage for all Orientation sessions
-Present Orientation information to large groups of students and parents during first-year and transfer area meetings
- Provide Orientation advising to incoming first-year and transfer students
- Serve as emergency backup for first-year or transfer area meetings if assigned advisor is unavailable
- Attend the Majors Fair with or on behalf of the coordinator on Day 1 of Orientation as needed
