Appointment: Instructor for the Advanced Backpacking course in the Physical Education, Athletics, Recreation Department. Spring Semester 2020. Course is PE 132 and the schedule will be determined later in collaboration with the department and instructor.

Spring Semester runs January 21 - May 15, 2020

Responsibilities:

This position combines evening classroom time and leading overnight adventures in the Pacific Northwest for up to 11 students. The primary emphasis of this course is on cold weather, off trail travel in the alpine environment. The course curriculum generally covers avalanche safety, snow analysis, snow travel, winter camping, navigation, wilderness ethics, and leadership in the outdoors. The primary emphasis of the course is to prepare students to lead trips on their own and to promote a lifetime enjoyment of the natural environment.

Qualifications:

    At least 5 years of experience leading overnight groups in the backcountryPrior experience leading groups in winter avalanche terrainStrong background in outdoor leadership skillsExperience teaching and ability to present outdoor related curriculum in the classroom settingAIARE 1 or equivalent experience/training required, AIARE 2 preferredValid driver’s license and clean driving recordExperience driving 15 passenger vans or large vehiclesExperience backpacking and mountaineering in the PNW preferred but not required.Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certificationsAbility to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
