Associate Director, Finance Research & Trading Lab

DepartmentThe BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab (FRTL), at the Rotman School of Management, is a state-of-the-art facility that focuses on the integration of theory and research with practice. Research databases and real-time access to global financial resources allow students to link classroom lessons to actual securities and markets. In addition, our custom-designed suite of instructional products use interactive simulations to develop skills for making good financial decisions. The FRTL houses a broad range of activities that enhance research, teaching, training and global opportunities for the Rotman community.

The Associate Director will be responsible, in collaboration with the Academic Director, for providing strategic leadership, advisory and managerial oversight in directing the staff and activities of the FRTL at the Rotman School of Management. The Associate Director will be accountable for development, project management and administrative functions related to the FRTL and its performance including management of FRTL staff, budgets and planning. Since many of the FRTL support activities and development opportunities involve quantitative applications, an understanding of those techniques, including coding, will be important for supervising development and support staff.

The Associate Director should have entrepreneurial ability with business acumen in order to direct development to support and grow the market for our existing products and activities. Since many of those activities involve service and support for the entire Rotman community, the ability to work productively, with maturity and respect, with all university stakeholders and external clients -- including faculty, staff and students -- is critically important.

Given that the FRTL develops and directs many events both locally and globally, the Associate Director will be responsible for interacting with senior business leaders and decision makers. Therefore, the incumbent must have the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with varied constituent groups both internally and internationally while representing the FRTL and the Rotman School with credibility and trust.

CampusI.EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Applied Statistics or related discipline required. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

II.EXPERIENCE:
•Minimum of five (5) years of related management experience, preferably in a university environment.
•Demonstrated experience in managing and leading staff and teams.
•Experience soliciting and interpreting requirements from end users (faculty, staff, etc.) for the development or enhancement of custom products and services.
•Demonstrated experience in project management and event coordination.

III.SKILLS:
•Demonstrated strong, practical understanding of strategic leadership with the ability to define vision and priorities, governance structures, organization design and change management, and resource plans.
•Strong planning and organizational skills, project and event management, and budget management.
•Proven ability to manage, develop, mentor and support staff.
•Self-motivated, flexible, adaptable, and responsive to feedback.
•Demonstrate sound judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
•Creative problem-solving skills, independent judgment, critical thinking.
•Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure with good decision-making skills.
•Entrepreneurial leadership abilities, able to identify and develop new business opportunities.
•Proven networking and relationship development and management capabilities.
•Maturity and professionalism to deal with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders is essential.
•Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively with highly diverse and demanding communities of stakeholders. The incumbent must have political acumen, negotiation and persuasion skills, be diplomatic and be able to engage effectively with multiple stakeholders including faculty, corporate clients, university administrators, staff, alumni, students, and business partners. Tact, cultural sensitivity, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters are important.
•Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

IV.OTHER:
•Strong computer skills; familiarity with coding (e.g. Excel/VBA, Python, API) and simulation tools (e.g. Monte Carlo).
•Knowledge sufficient to supervise IT and AV support and other technologies.
