Automotive Mechanic - Facilities Management

Requirements

The Automotive Mechanic performs journey level skilled work involving the repair and preventive maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and other engine-powered equipment. The incumbent's work constitutes a direct service of the department in ensuring comfortable, safe, and clean equipment for the University. S/he provides and receives information and instruction from the supervisor or designee, with work being limited to the shift assigned. Reporting directly to Garage Supervisor along with five other Mechanic positions, the Automotive Mechanic has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

• Works on gasoline, diesel and alternatively fueled equipment, including hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer controlled utility systems, controls and features.
• Tears down components and assemblies on vehicles by removing parts such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears and cylinders.
• Thoroughly tests equipment and vehicles after maintenance/repair work is completed, connecting, meshing, aligning, and adjusting items and systems to assure proper operation of the computer system or vehicle.
• Exercises independent judgement under minimum supervision to carry out preventive maintenance and repairs and determines causes of vehicle and equipment operating problems by tracing, locating and diagnosing defects.
• Selects and safely uses proper tools, equipment, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures and techniques, making permanent and timely repairs to equipment and vehicles.
• Works independently, and when required with other mechanics to perform all preventive maintenance and repair assignments in accordance with technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics and similar guides.
• Ensures that work passes performance tests administered by the Lead Mechanic, reading and interpreting sketches, specifications, and service manuals.
• Ensures that work complies with all applicable codes and regulations, using and disposing materials in accordance with applicable environmental safety and control regulations.
• Completes and submits forms and documents as required to ensure that information is properly recorded and stored.
• Remains up-to-date on department, University and applicable trade codes and regulations.
• Performs snow removal and other duties assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Any combination of technical education and experiences equivalent to years of verifiable experience in problem diagnosis, repair and inspection of a variety of automotive vehicles and engine-powered equipment
• Valid current Class ‘C' (or equivalent) motor vehicle operator's license from applicant's state of residence at time of employment application
• Either a Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver's License or an Instructional Permit for a Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver's License issued by incumbent's first day of employment
• Basic knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, test procedures and practices used in the repair and preventive maintenance of equipment
• Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation and relationships of a variety of vehicles and engine powered equipment, transmissions and gear reduction systems including those with torque converters, planetary gears and multiple gear ranges, and driveline assemblies, including differentials
• Basic knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trades with the basic skills to diagnose mechanical and related malfunctions
• Basic skills for the use of hand and power tools and equipment associated with the transit maintenance trade, and basic skills to remove and tear down major components and assemblies such as engines, transmissions, and differentials
