Job Purpose: Provide advice and counsel to the general business and on-going operations of the Institute. Includes leading and/or conducting legal negotiations, research, document review, opinion preparation and case management. Provide legal review of proposed and established Institute policies, procedures, and governance processes.

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide legal advice to relevant stakeholders on proposed and existing policy, practices, and specific legal matters on various topics.
  • Identify, analyze, report and advise on existing, proposed and pending changes to laws and regulations impacting the Institute on various topics.
  • Prepare and negotiate contracts and other agreements on behalf of the Institute.
  • Prepare legal responses to various entities and external parties.
  • Coordinate and manage litigation and other projects involving the Institute as assigned.
  • Interact with external counsel, representatives of the state Attorney General's office and Board of Regents legal staff on pending litigation and other legal issues.
  • Work collaboratively within the Office of the General Counsel on any coordinated projects with overlapping areas of responsibility and perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Education: Juris Doctorate from an accredited school
  • Work Experience: Four to six years job related experience
  • Certifications: Member of the Georgia Bar or ability to become licensed as a member of the Georgia Bar within 12 months of hire
  • Skills: This job requires professionally advanced knowledge of the law, especially as applied within a higher education and research oriented environment. Additionally, the ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy are required as are skills in negotiation, strategy development, multi-tasking and relationship building. Use of office and legal related computer applications is required.

This position will report to the Chief Counsel for Transactions & Administration.  This position is responsible for legal review and negotiation of various transactions arising across all units and affiliates. Duties may include but are not limited to: examining, negotiating and preparing key documents, including agreements involving vendors, research, real estate, construction, development, and licensing for Georgia Tech and its affiliates.  This position will research issues and prepare opinions and recommendations on a wide variety of issues including insurance, gifts, and export and regulatory compliance. The ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy and success in driving solutions is required.  This role will also support other practice areas as needed, including Employment & Litigation, International & General Affairs, and Compliance & Ethics.

 

 

Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: Institute executive management and department heads, research and academic faculty, cooperative organizations, Institute staff, opposing counsel, and representatives of various regulatory agencies.

 

Department Description  The Office of the General Counsel provides a coordinated framework for Institute units engaged in ethics, compliance assurance. and institutional risk management. This combination of functions offers a focused approach to legal and policy matters affecting the campus and enables consideration of compliance and risk issues in assessing institutional initiatives.

 

The Office of the General Counsel brings leadership and operational oversight to Affiliated Organizations, Ethics and Compliance, Legal Affairs, and Risk Management.
