Position Summary

This position in the Field Research Services (FRS) unit supervises temporary research support staff on the Dempsey, Westbrook and Bledsoe farms in the Griffin, Ga area. Researchers from the Horticulture and Plant Pathology departments oversee research plots on these farms. This position supervises and participates in the establishment, planting, fertilizing, maintenance and harvesting of field research plots requiring the usage of equipment for operations such as tillage, planting, cultivation, harvesting, and mowing. This position supports research with blueberries, peaches, ornamentals and small grains.

The role coordinates with the Superintendent and/or Agricultural Specialist concerning field work for the unit. The position operates various types of farm equipment such as tractors, plot combines, harrows, tillers, mowers, and other equipment and collects soil and/or plant samples from field plots. It also performs preventative maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment such as mowers, harrows, combines and tractors and purchases needed supplies.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Knowledge of agronomic and/or horticulture plant pests, such as weeds, insects and diseases. Knowledge of proper pesticide safety and usage. Knowledge of soil fertility and testing. Knowledge of tractors, combines, farm equipment and maintenance techniques. Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of subordinate personnel.

Physical Demands

Work in adverse climatic conditions and able to do heavy lifting (50 lbs). Work outdoors at hard manual labor under varied climatic conditions.

Maintains records pertaining to field work, fertilizer and pesticide application, amounts of stored pesticide and/or fertilizer, and field assignments. Performs daily maintenance checks and inspection of equipment, tractors, combines, and trucks. Purchases and prepares orders for seed, fertilizer, pesticides, and other needed farm items. Eliminates all excess crops after being harvested.
