The Academic Advisor II position in the Office of Academic Advising meets with assigned students, provides each student with accurate information about the student’s intended degree program, makes recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generates advising forms detailing these recommendations (if applicable), and maintains notes about these meetings.

Advisors also assist students with referrals to departments and other colleges at UGA, study abroad programs, tutoring and other forms of academic assistance, etc. Advisors at this level are expected to have full knowledge of resources that support students in areas other than their academic life and to refer students to appropriate individuals and offices as needed.

An Academic Advisor II must maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records, and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students. Regular attendance at staff meetings is mandatory and workshop/retreat attendance is also expected. This is the second in a series of four classifications. The work is performed under general supervision with no supervisory responsibilities.

Works directly with students as an academic advisor. In this role, develops and maintains knowledge of College of Education (COE) majors as well as general COE and University of Georgia (UGA) requirements and policies. Helps students understand programs of study and comply with institutional requirements, policies, and procedures. Advises prospective majors, intended majors, and declared majors via scheduled appointments, walk-in visits, emails, and phone calls. Assists students in the selection of courses and other educational experiences. Evaluates student progress toward established goals. Assists students in decision-making and career direction. Assists students who have academic difficulties and refers them to the appropriate resources.

Works with assigned program/departmental contacts as directed, including: COE and UGA departments; working with appropriate faculty and staff; serving as a liaison to assigned COE academic department(s); providing timely departmental updates to the Office of Academic Advising; assisting program coordinators with curriculum issues and preparation of program reports; facilitating the application and admissions process for assigned majors (if applicable).
