TheUniversity of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry has justwelcomed their new Department Chair, C. Neill Epperson, MD and is in theprocess of growing the Department of Psychiatry with new programs and expandingexisting programs.

 

Under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist, TheTMS technician will operate transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) machines toprovide TMS treatments to patients with major depressive disorder andobsessive-compulsive disorder in the CU Medicine Faculty Practice TMSProgram.  The TMS technician will alsofollow research protocols to provide TMS for experimental indications such asPTSD, substance use disorders, and disorders of executive functioning.  They will provide support and psychoeducationto patients receiving TMS for psychiatric conditions.

 

Examples of Work Performed (under the directsupervision of a psychiatrist):

  • Preparepatients for ascertainment of motor evoked potential
  • Operateand control settings of electrophysiologic recording device
  • Measure,calculate, and log recorded electrophysiologic information
  • Independentlyadminister TMS according to clinical and research protocols
    • Ascertain motor evoked potential
    • Operate and control settings of electrophysiologicrecording device
    • Measure, calculate, and log recordedelectrophysiologic information
    • Correctly position the TMS coil
  • Monitorfor adverse effects and notify the psychiatrist
  • Assist inthe management of adverse effects including seizures
  • Administervalidated rating scales to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment
  • Providepsychoeducation curriculum to patients
  • Activelyparticipate in marketing and patient recruitment.
  • Obtaininsurance authorization
  • Assistpsychiatrist by gathering and reviewing medical records to aid in appropriatepatient selection
  • Provideany in-house required trainings on TMS machines
  • Maintainand improve skills by participation in in-services and trainings
  • Followinfection control guidelines, including universal precautions
  • Participatein scheduled individual supervision, health team meetings, interdisciplinarywork groups, staff meetings, and other required meetings.
  • Completeall required clinical and administrative documentation to accepted standards ofpractice, accurately, legibly, and by established timelines on electronichealth record (EHR) system and paper as needed.
  • Performother delegated duties under the direction of the psychiatrist

Qualifications

Minimum Educationand Qualifications

  • High schooldiploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Two years ofexperience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to theposition
  • Medical AssistantCertificate
  • Additionalexperience and certifications will increase applicants’ competitiveness.  (e.g. bachelor degree in psychology orrelated major, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Certificate, ProfessionalResearch Assistant experience)
Substitution: College or universitycourse work appropriate to the work assignment, may substitute on a year foryear basis for the experience but not for the Medical Assistant Certificate.

PreferredQualifications:

  • Previousexperience as a TMS technician
  • Experienceobtaining insurance authorization
  • Previouswork in a mental healthcare environment
  • PriorElectronic Health Record (EHR) experience.
