The Experiential Learning Center has an opening for a Full Time University Staff (unclassified) Internship Advisor/Coordinator position.

Nature of Work

The Experiential Learning Center (ELC) opened in 2008 and promotes a variety of experiential learning activities to assist students in bridging classroom work with world of work experience. The ELC reports to the Office of Academic Achievement and provides centralized experiential learning services for undergraduates at the University of Colorado Denver including internships, community-based learning (service learning – civic engagement), and undergraduate research.  The ELC recently moved into the campus resource – LynxConnect which houses the ELC, Career Center, Study Abroad, and Undergraduate Research in one collaborative working/learning environment. 

Position Emphasis:

The ELC Internship Advisor Coordinator is a highly motivated and creative professional who develops and coordinates high quality internship and experiential learning opportunities for students in a variety of majors/programs across the campus specifically Engineering and Undergraduate Business. Primary responsibilities include advising students, employer relations, internship development and coordination, faculty relations, presentations, and program management.

Examples of Work Performed

Internship Coordination

  • Develop and arrange internships for students that will enhance academic learning within the following majors including by not limited to: Engineering and Undergraduate Business.
  • Serve as a liaison to academic departments. Develop and maintain relationships with individual faculty and academic advisors to coordinate credit-bearing internships for students.
  • Collaborate and develop relationships with employers/community partners.
  • Coordinate evaluation process for employers and students.
  • Work with the Director to collect, analyze and prepare internship statistics and assessments, as required.
  • Develop strategies to increase student participation in the Internship Program.

Coaching and Advising

  • Serve as the primary internship contact with students from the College of Engineering and the School of Business.
  • Prepare, coach, and advise students regarding all phases of internship preparation including assistance with internship search, resume/cover letter writing and interview preparation.
  • Refer students to appropriate internship experiences and monitor their progress throughout the internship.
  • Make presentations to classes, student groups, parent orientations etc. to promote Internship Program and provide professional development opportunities.
  • Responsible for managing non-credit internships supporting students in reflection on their experiences through providing professional development/skill-set development conversations and workshops.

Employer Relations

  • Conduct outreach to companies and community organizations to develop new internship opportunities, this includes approximately 10-12 site visits per semester.
  • Serve as a liaison between the University and employers to promote and administer the internship.
  • Maintain current employer relationships by systematically contacting them to identify current recruitment needs and providing consistent, high quality customer service.
  • Research new internship opportunities for students based on individual students’ interests and career goals.
  • Assist employers in posting positions on Handshake and accessing appropriate candidates.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $37,642 to $50,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in student affairs, counseling, public administration, business, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, social science, media, arts, humanities, or a directly related field from an accredited institution
  • 1 year of professional level experience as an internship advisor/coordinator, career counselor/coach, or career/employment related student affairs professional. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, public administration, business, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, social science, or a related field.
  • One year of experience with career management systems (e.g. Handshake), student information systems (e.g. CU-SIS), survey systems (e.g. Qualtrics), and other systems.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to handle a great deal of detail and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment; identify and resolve problems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Engineering and Business Industries/Professions.
