Founded in 1993, Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy has established itself as one of the premier nonpartisan public policy think tanks in the country. As an integral part of Rice University, the Baker Institute has a strong track record of achievement based on the work of its fellows, scholars, Rice faculty scholars, and staff. The institute collaborates with experts from academia, government, the media, business, and nongovernmental and private organizations.

The Baker Institute is seeking a staff editor to edit academic papers and event materials, including agendas, programs, invitations, and speaker bios. S/he will also edit policy reports and other high-level research publications as necessary, write event and website-related content, contribute to the institute newsletter, and be responsible for writing and posting content to the institute’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.

- Understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practices of communications, public relations, and editorial content
- Ability to initiate and develop sources for features, news release, bulletin, etc.
- Ability to conduct source-gathering, interview administration, and performing research for appropriate contents and media
- Ability to edit manuscripts for form, content, style, and organization
- Experience with job-required software applications
- Ability to perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail

Skills Preferred

- Proven ability to meet deadlines, work independently and handle multiple projects
- Exceptional editing and writing skills in AP style
- Experience with content management systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, particularly Track Changes
- Some marketing experience is a plus

Internal Contacts: The position has frequent contact with Baker Institute staff, fellows, student interns, and campus collaborators.

Physical Demands

Must be able to work in front of a computer for up to eight hours a day.

Essential Functions

- Reviews content to be disseminated through websites and print publications
- Researches, writes, and edits publications for style and substance
- Edits manuscripts for content, style, and organization
- Checks editorials for accuracy and uses own judgment in critiquing the work
- Coordinates publication / editorial schedules, and monitors process in consultation with
supervisor or client
- Coordinates and facilitates publication process
- Establish and maintains communication with internal clients and external media outlets to facilitate promotion and information dissemination
- Perform all other duties as assigned

- Writes and edits content for the institute’s Annual Report and exhibits of archival materials in the building lobby
- Writes text for brochures and other promotional materials
- Drafts and posts content for the institute website, email newsletter, and social media accounts
- Occasionally provides live social media presence for Baker Institute events and programs
- Oversees annual update of fellow/scholar bios, program descriptions, course listings, student internships, and board member bios
- Keeps open lines of communication with various staff departments to negotiate changes
- Updates website as necessary
