The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of Spring 2019, we currently enroll approximately 35,000 students in which 58% identify as Latinx, 9% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 6% as Black/African American, 19% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 8% as multiracial. FCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Under the general direction of the Dean of Instruction, Allied Health, Physical Education and Athletics Division and in accordance with the policies and administrative regulations of State Center Community College District, the Director of the Associate Degree Nursing Program will be responsible for:


  • Providing day-to-day leadership, guidance and direction to nursing program faculty and staff;
  • Collaborating with the faculty for the development, organization, and operation of the nursing program;
  • Developing annual program and staff objectives to facilitate achievement of the mission of the College and the program;
  • Utilizing data to develop, implement, and assess a program to support nursing student satisfaction and outcomes;
  • Ensuring that the Registered Nursing Program maintains approval with the Board of Registered Nursing;
  • Selecting, training, and evaluating nursing faculty in consultation with other faculty members;
  • Arranging for substitute instructors when necessary;
  • Recommending teaching, class and room assignments in collaboration with faculty for final approval by the Dean;
  • Monitoring enrollment in classes and making recommendations as appropriate according to registration trends and fiscal demands;
  • Arranging for the use of off-site facilities for clinical instruction;
  • Serving as a liaison between nursing faculty, administration, and the Board of Registered Nursing in curriculum development and improvement through regular review, evaluation, and revision for currency, relevance and alignment with Board of Registered Nursing requirements and approvals;
  • Leading faculty in department program review and infusing an equity lens in the development, review and revision of student learning outcomes;
  • Implementing and developing student selection procedures through collaboration with faculty;
  • Developing policies and procedures for the maintenance of student records;
  • Serving as a mediator in problems involving students and staff;
  • Promoting collaboration with other schools of nursing and the health care community in the development of partnerships;
  • Developing, monitoring, and managing the program budgets;
  • Recommending the purchase of supplies and equipment for the nursing program using the college action planning process;
  • Attending and participating in professional conferences and meetings including, but not limited to, those related to nursing education and as required for training purposes by the Board of Registered Nursing;
  • Preparing reports related to the nursing program and ensuring all reports required by campus administration are completed according to identified guidelines including program review, unit goals, educational and facility master plans;
  • Assisting faculty in planning and organizing in-service educational programs;
  • Calling, attending, and presiding at nursing advisory committee meetings;
  • Promoting, publicizing, and representing the Registered Nursing program;
  • Demonstrating sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participating in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District and promoting workplace diversity, inclusion, cultural competency, and a positive work environment;
  • Promoting an environment that encourages cooperation, collaboration, and creativity to advance student success;
  • Providing leadership in securing and monitoring external funding for the Registered Nursing program; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Include approval by the Board of Registered Nursing of the following:

  • State of California license as a registered nurse;

    AND

  • Master’s degree or higher in nursing, education, or administration from an accredited college or university;

    AND

  • A minimum of one year’s experience as an administrator;

    AND

  • A minimum of two years’ experience teaching in an Associate Degree or higher level nursing program;

    AND

  • At least one year of experience as a Registered Nurse providing direct patient care;

    AND

  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in nursing or other related field;
  • Experience in preparing and managing budgets;
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations and state licensing processes and requirements;
  • Experience promoting collaboration among the college, the nursing program, and health care services in the community to build partnerships;
  • Experience mentoring, assigning, supervising, and evaluating faculty;
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to inclusion and diversity, including but not limited to differences in ethnicity, national origin, race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification and abilities;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students;
  • Knowledge of and experience in college-level curriculum development;
  • Experience with nursing program assessment and evaluation, including program approval;
  • Familiarity with current issues in college nursing education;
  • Demonstrated excellence in nursing practice, college level Registered Nursing instruction and administration;
  • Knowledge of and experience in securing external funding;
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the community college and that of the Associate Degree Nursing Program; and demonstrated ability to provide vision, leadership, and support for the needs of the students, the faculty, and staff of the nursing program; and
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth.
Conditions of Employment124 duty days and 11 vacation days for a total of 135 days.Salary and Benefits

Salary is $61,336 – $77,292 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,041 is available. Salary and doctoral stipend will be prorated based on actual duty days worked. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Salary listed is the prorated annual salary based on a partial year assignment of 124 duty days.

Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President, Instruction and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

This is an academic management position, exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, with responsibility for formulation and implementation of district policies, regulations, budget decisions, and supervision of personnel including assignment of work, evaluation of performance, adjusting grievances, recommending hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion, and termination.

This is an interim position.

Organization

State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million. 

Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
