Applications will continue to be accepted until this date, but those received after the review date will only be considered if the position has not yet been filled. Description

The lab of Professor Jennifer Doudna at UC Berkeley invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in QB3 funded by “m-CAFEs: Microbial Community Analysis and Functional Evaluation in Soils”. This DOE funded project aims to address core gaps in our basic knowledge of microorganisms left by isolate-centric approaches. To accomplish this goal, the project applies cutting edge observational and perturbation approaches to complex microbiomes. This postdoctoral position will focus on the development of in situ genome editing within complex microbial communities. The work will require leveraging culturing systems such as EcoFABs (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41592-019-0465-0), CRISPR-Cas editing systems, metabolic engineering, and sequence-based approaches previously developed in the m-CAFEs startup period. The community editing effort is collaborative between the laboratories of Jennifer Doudna, Jill Banfield, Adam Deutschbauer, and Rodolphe Barrangou.

Responsibilities:

The Doudna lab is seeking to recruit a motivated, post-doctoral fellow interested in working in a highly collaborative environment. Within the broader microbial community editing effort, this postdoc will drive efforts to enable in situ metabolic engineering within microbial consortia. Ample mentorship and support will be provided for the entire duration of the project.

Basic Qualifications (at time of application):

  • Ph.D. or equivalent international degree or enrolled in Ph.D. or equivalent international degree program

    Additional Qualifications (by start date):

  • Ph.D. or equivalent international degree
  • The candidate should have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.

    Preferred Qualifications (by start date):

  • Strong background in metabolism, microbiology, microbial genetics, and molecular biology
  • Experience engineering heterologous carbon source assimilation pathways. Ideally this would include expression of these pathways in multiple hosts.
  • Experience cultivating multiple bacterial species. Preferably including non-model strains, environmental isolates, and anaerobic cultures.
  • Experience establishing genetic tools in non-model bacteria.
  • Experience working with bacteriophage.

Appointment: This position reports to Dr. Jennifer Doudna and will be working at the Innovative Genomics Institute building at UC Berkeley. The initial appointment is 100% for one (1) year with the expectation of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The anticipated start date of this position will be as early as January 2020.

Salary: The annual salary range for this position is $54,000-$62,872. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
