As a member of the University Management Council and reporting to the Provost / VP for Academic & Student Affairs, the Chief Student Affairs Officer (CSAO) oversees student co-curricular experiences across the university.

The Chief Student Affairs Officer is the chief administrative and financial officer for the Student Affairs Division. The CSAO develops and enacts a set of strategic priorities in line with the university strategy, focusing on Holistic Education, Inclusive Environment, and High Value Education. Student Affairs' mission is to enhance the intellectual, social, ethical and personal and professional development of our students and prepare them to become engaged and constructive members of a diverse and inclusive global community. A primary goal is the retention and success (academic, personal, and professional) of our students.

The CSAO is responsible for the strategic vision, leadership and assessment/accountability of the following departments/programs: Abraham Campus Center (ACC), Academic Success Center (ASC), Accessibility Services, Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), Career Services, Commencement, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Dining Services, Office of First Generation & Peer Mentoring, Student Health Center, Housing and Residential Life, International Student Services and Engagement, Judicial Affairs-Student Social Misconduct, Center for Multicultural Services, Office of Student Life (Student Government (ASULV), Campus Activities Board (CAB), Clubs and Organizations, Greek Life, Leadership Education and Development, New Student Orientation), Title III HSI STEM Grant, Title IX Deputy Coordinator, University Safety Operations (Campus Safety and Transportation) and Veteran Students Success.


Specific Duties:
Strategic Planning
  • Works closely with other members of the Provost Council and University Management Council to develop and maintain the University’s strategic plans for the offices of Student Affairs, ensuring alignment with the overall institutional strategic planning efforts in fulfillment of the University’s mission.
  • Monitors unit operational plans, budget allocations, and expenditures to ensure they are appropriately aligned with the University’s and Student Affairs Division’s strategic plan

Operational Oversight
  • Works closely with the Division’s support departments to ensure they are operating at an optimal level and providing campus constituents with appropriate functional access and support.
  • Implements and monitors ongoing benchmarking, assessment & improvements of all SA’s support departments.

Consultation and Advocacy
  • Meets with individuals and committees to understand functional area needs and requirements and provide recommendations and advice on appropriate solutions.
  • Keeps campus constituents informed on Division workload and priorities and works with departments’ managers to ensure needs are met in a timely manner through project scheduling and/or outsourcing of work as appropriate.
  • Advocates for campus constituents by addressing their physical, technological, personal, and safety concerns and needs when conflict or dissatisfaction arise regarding service department performance.
  • Represents their interests to ensure needs are addressed in a timely, effective, and appropriate manner.
  • Advocate for the voice of all students; foster student success, engagement, and retention; serve as a liaison to all parents/guardians.
  • Leadership, strategic visioning, establishing strategic goals and objectives aligned with the University Mission and Baccalaureate Goals for the entire Division of Student Affairs.
  • Develop the budget for all Student Affairs’ departments, fiscal oversight, propose fees, monitor 36 budgets, recommend room and board rates, advocate for resources.
  • Lead, envision, create, operationalize, and oversee the implementation of strategic goals for all departments for retention programs, services, and activities.
  • Oversee federal laws and state laws compliance for all the departments, particularly the following: Student Judicial, Title IX/VAWA, Campus SaVE Act, Clery Act, International Student Services & Engagement (INS and Homeland Security), Student Health Services, Dining Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and all Higher Education laws (e.g., FERPA).
  • Oversee the academic, diversity and inclusivity, accessibility, innovation, teaching and learning, instructional technology, career services/exploration, and holistic development and success of our students and staff within our Division.
  • Act with integrity and mindfully of cultural competence to our students, faculty, staff, and community.
  • Focus on voice, needs of students of color, First Generation students; promote and provide cultural competency training to all staff.
  • Serves as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT): Team goal is to identify person(s) of concern for self-harm and/or harm to others; intervene so that the community is safe.
  • Conduct Judicial Appeals for Title IX and other Student Social Misconduct.
  • Serve as Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
  • Promote and provide staff professional development through on-campus (internal) training(s) and in-services; AND support, promote professional development at national, regional, and day conferences in the specialization of their department(s).
  • Advocate, promote, and lead processes for the programmatic and design phases of new construction.
  • Advocate, promote, and lead processes for grant writing.
  • Engage in community outreach and the promotion of the visibility of the institution.
  • Serve on the University’s WASC Steering Committee to ensure Student Affairs’ engagement in the WASC Accreditation processes.
  • Serve on University-wide committees to represent the voice, needs, and concerns of Student Affairs’ departments; and, foster collaboration between our team/departments and other teams/departments across campus for student success and retention.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act; designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Campus Safety so that they may be included and published in the University’s Annual Security Report.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree
  • 8 - 10 years experience in Student Affairs leadership at the Associate Dean, Dean, Associate Vice President, or Chief Student Affairs Officer level.
  • 8 - 10 years demonstrated commitment and experience advocating for cultural competency and inclusivity for all students.
  • Demonstrate commitment to students’ wellbeing, success, engagement, and retention.
  • Strong leadership, vision setting, and strategic planning and goal setting.
  • Strong budgetary skills and human resource management.
  • Team building and working with diverse constituents.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively
  • Effective decision making and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive leadership, engaging a diverse/thriving faculty, staff, student body.
