This is a temporary, full-time, benefited, 12-month pay plan position in the Office of Admissions. Position Summary: The regional admissions counselor is responsible for recruiting prospective students to Humboldt State University (HSU). This position is regionally-based in the Central California region (Bakersfield to Stockton) and will telephone/video commute to campus meetings as necessary. The incumbent will travel to high schools, community colleges, churches, community-based organizations, military installations, and other areas in the assigned region to develop partnerships, recruit students, and assist prospective students in gathering the necessary information they need to make an informed decision about HSU. The Regional Admissions Counselor will participate in recruitment and special events (both on- and off-campus) and be assigned major responsibility for one or two programs such as community-based partnership development and targeted recruitment to special populations.

Duties:
Actively recruit assigned area:
  • Manage designated recruitment area which includes: developing and maintaining relationships with and providing service to high school and college personnel
  • Schedule school visits to speak with students regarding HSU
  • Conduct appointments and presentations at community colleges
  • Establish connections with individuals who influence students making decisions on higher education

    Assist prospective students with questions regarding HSU:
  • Meet with prospective students and counselors during schools visit or off-campus to answer their questions and help them with the application process
  • Follow-up correspondence and individual counseling to prospective students via in-person meetings, e-mail, telephone, etc.
  • Conduct targeted recruitment efforts to increase application, yield, and retention

    Application processing, follow-up, and evaluation:
  • Perform initial evaluation of first-year students/transfer applications for determining eligibility requirements and enter information into the student information system
  • Follow-Up with applicants to assist in the application process. Provide support to parents/teachers/counselors to help their students through the application and admissions process

    Develop partnerships with community-based organizations and school districts:
  • Develop partnerships, with the support of the Director of Admissions, to create new opportunities for MOU and pipeline creation
  • Conduct specialized workshops around the application, financial literacy, and related topics to assist families in the college selection process

    Other duties as assigned by Director of Admissions:
  • Recruitment strategy projects
  • SMS/MMS projects
  • Other outreach projects
  • Participate in two on-campus events
  • Participate in on-campus team training

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a jobrelated field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities listed below may be substituted for the required education on a yearforyear basis.

    Experience: Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
    This position is responsible for recruiting the Central California region, which is defined as the following counties: San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Mariposa, Tolumne, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Kern, and Madera. The Regional Admissions Counselor duties require the incumbent to be available to work in this geographic area on a daily basis, which is a condition of employment.

    This position requires several weeks of out-of-region recruitment travel across California, and limited travel out-of-state. The ability to participate in official travel to perform the duties required of the position is a condition of employment.

    Possessing and maintaining a valid California driver's license for the operation of a vehicle and maintaining a good driving record is a condition of employment. A good driving record is interpreted according to UCAM 6562 which requires certification that the incumbent has not been issued more than three moving violations or been responsible for more than three accidents (or any combination of more than three there-of) during the past 12 months.

    This is an exempt position, and hours may periodically go above 40 hours/week and require working early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts
  • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of HSU's overall operation, functions and programs
  • Make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas
