Established in 1863 as Kansas State Normal School, Emporia State University was the first public institution in Kansas charged with preparing teachers, and The Teachers College continues the legacy of excellence as a national leader in educator preparation. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of The Teachers College at Emporia

State University. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and administers a college offering bachelor’s, master’s, and specialist’s degree programs. The departments within The Teachers College are Counselor Education; Elementary Education, Early

Childhood, and Special Education; Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Instructional

Design and Technology; Psychology; and School Leadership/Middle and Secondary Teacher


Required qualifications include an earned doctorate in any discipline within the college; a record as an accomplished academic administrator; a demonstrated record in teaching, service and research appropriate for the rank of Professor; an understanding of shared governance in academics, budgeting, and personnel issues; and experience in P-12 schools. Desirable competencies include experience as dean, an associate dean, or department chair; experience in leadership of CAEP/NCATE accreditation at the college level; experience with P-12 university collaborative efforts; experience and commitment to learning outcomes assessment.
