The Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a three-year Limited Term Instructor position in the International Indigenous Studies Program for an anticipated start date on July 1, 2020.

The University of Calgary is engaged in a consultative process with knowledge keepers, Elders, and leaders of the Treaty #7 peoples, the Métis Nation, academics and university administrators. This ongoing process has resulted in the development of an Indigenous Strategy, ii' taa'poh'to'p- Together in a Good Way, intended to guide the university's relationship with the Indigenous peoples in whose territory the university resides. The Indigenous Strategy identifies the International Indigenous Studies program (INDG) as a source of strength in the effort to transform and decolonize the way teaching and learning occurs on campus. To deepen and direct this strength, the Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of instructor in the INDG program (three-year limited term).

The successful candidate will normally teach seven undergraduate courses in the INDG program every year. The University of Calgary offers courses in four terms, as well as in one-week intensives ("block week"), other accelerated formats, and off-campus teaching. This format provides the opportunity to offer intensive land-based courses in any season, as well as courses with non-traditional timetabling.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A record of, or potential for, teaching excellence at the post-secondary level (undergraduate)
  • An ongoing commitment to professional development in the practice and study of teaching
  • Experience or interest in, curriculum review and development
  • Competency in Indigenous pedagogy and working with Indigenous learners
  • Evidence of thought provoking or innovative pedagogy

The successful candidate will hold either a Masters or PhD in Indigenous Studies or a related field. A willingness to collaborate with the Treaty #7 peoples and the Métis Nation is also expected. The University of Calgary is committed to community engagement in teaching, research, and service activities. The position will include the opportunity to engage in scholarship necessary to remain current in pedagogy and content in Indigenous Studies.

The INDG program is an interdisciplinary program that centres the experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada and internationally. The program focuses on various aspects of Indigenous perspectives related to arts, culture, ways of knowing, languages, economies, politics, and community structures, and attracts students from across the university (www.ucalgary.ca/indg/). The program is housed administratively in the Department of Political Science, and possesses its own Director, staff, affiliated faculty, and governance structure.

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application online via the Careers at UCalgary site (https://careers.ucalgary.ca/). Please be aware that the application process allows for only four attachments. Your four application attachments should be organized to contain the following (which may require you to merge documents):

  • Letter of interest detailing why you meet the requirements of the position
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • A statement of teaching philosophy and a teaching dossier (which must, at minimum, include two sample syllabi, two complete sets of course evaluations, and evidence of teaching experience with Indigenous content and learners)
  • Evidence of the applicant's connection to an Indigenous community
