Clemson University: College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences: Agricultural Sciences
Climate Resilience Specialist

Location: Clemson/Pendleton, SC

The Agricultural Sciences Department, within the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) at Clemson University, is seeking to fill a position as tenure-track Specialist at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Climate Resilience. This position is one of four tenure-track faculty hires foundational to a state-wide, strategic water initiative. The position is a 12-month appointment and located at the SC Water Resources Center building ten minutes from the main campus.

Clemson University is an R1 Land Grant university located on the shores of Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Upper Piedmont of South Carolina, USA. The 1,400-acre campus is part of the 18,000 acres of University Farms and Forests devoted to teaching and research. Clemson University is recognized as a Top 25 public university by U.S. News and World Report.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally-recognized, externally-funded research program on climate resilience. A changing climate will result in measurable impacts to the regional water cycle and water availability in South Carolina, likely affecting agricultural production on multiple levels at multiple scales. For Clemson Public Service and Agriculture (PSA) to become a leader and information resource for community and state decision-makers, PSA needs to address community resiliency and water management under changing climate conditions. This position provides science-based information to state agencies and local governments about the water resource impacts to changes in sea level, drought, and other climate-related issues related to agricultural, residential, and environmental water use. This specialist hire would serve the full PSA and Clemson University community in identifying how research on climate changes will impact South Carolina natural resources, management decisions and agriculture. The individual would then work amongst all Extension program teams to guide program development that will increase community and client planning and preparedness under changing weather patterns and resulting ecological impacts. The person selected for this position will have an affiliation with the S.C. Water Resources Center and work closely with on- and off-campus research and extension personnel, external stakeholders, and state/regional/national government agencies. Upon request, a joint appointment with the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences is available to foster collaborative research, teaching and graduate student advising opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Meteorology, Climatology, or other relevant field. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of collaborative research, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated success in obtaining external funding to support an ongoing research program.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please submit: (1) a letter of interest with applicant's contact information; (2) contact information for three references; (3) a one-page research philosophy and a one-page research plan; (4) an unofficial transcript from all degree-granting institutions (BS, MS, Ph.D.); and (5) a curriculum vitae to http://apply.interfolio.com/61464. This position will remain open until filled. For full consideration, please apply by December 31, 2019.

Organization

Working at Clemson University

Clemson is a dynamic research university located in Upstate South Carolina at the center of the booming I-85 corridor between Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta, Ga. One of the nation’s most selective public research universities according to U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, Clemson University is the school of choice among top students in South Carolina and is increasingly competitive for the best students in the region and the nation. More than 17,100 students select from 70 undergraduate and 100 graduate degree programs through five academic colleges: Agriculture, Forestry and Life SciencesArchitecture, Arts and HumanitiesBusiness and Behavioral ScienceEngineering and Science; and Health, Education and Human Development.

Clemson’s transformation into a leading research institution — currently attracting in excess of $140 million in externally funded research and sponsored program awards per year — is based upon an academic plan that identifies eight emphasis areas in which the University has opportunities to increase education and research, to align with South Carolina’s economic development needs and to draw upon faculty strengths. Emphasis areas include automotive and transportation technology, advanced materials, biotechnology and biomedical sciences, leadership and entrepreneurship, sustainable environment, information and communication technology, family and community living, and general education.

Major economic development initiatives that have emerged from the academic plan include the Clemson International Center for Automotive Research — a 250-acre campus in Greenville, which has generated more than $225 million in public and private commitments in just four years; an advanced materials initiative at the Clemson Research Park, which includes a new LEED Silver-certified facility; and the South Carolina Health Sciences Collaborative — an initiative of the state’s three research universities and major health-care systems.

As the state’s land-grant university, Clemson reaches out to citizens, communities and businesses all over South Carolina. The Public Service Activities division includes the county-based Cooperative Extension Service, five off-campus research and education centers through the Clemson University Experiment Station and critical regulatory responsibilities for plant and animal health.

The University boasts a 1,400-acre campus on the shores of Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Surrounding the campus are 18,000 acres of University farms and woodlands devoted to research. A warm campus environment, great weather and recreational activities offered by proximity to both the natural surroundings and large cities are part of the Clemson Experience.
