Department Description

The Chemistry Department is the largest department in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 43 faculty members, 44 SHRA and EHRA staff positions, 240 graduate students, 54 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF. and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.

Position Description

The Public Communication Specialist position will be responsible for establishing, developing and implementing a comprehensive Chemistry department communication plan and strategy. The communication plan is targeted internally and externally to include methods for initiating, developing, and maintaining working relationships with key internal and external individuals and organizations by continually keeping department, alumni, donors, campus, colleagues, and others abreast of developments in teaching and research within UNC-Chapel Hill Chemistry. This role will include understanding the mission, objectives and goals of a department to establish the most effective ways to successfully and strategically communicate by strategizing, planning, writing, editing and producing content and images for the Chemistry external and internal websites, department newsletter, social media, public display monitors, solicitations, and department seminars. This position will manage and oversee the communication that is essential for the department of Chemistry’s inward and outward facing presence in the scientific community.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

The ideal candidate must have:
-Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
-Extensive knowledge of visual communication techniques
-High attention to detail
-Strong organizational skills
-A working knowledge of and facility with social media platforms and analytic tools.
-Ability to meet deadlines with competing priorities.
-Understanding or ability to learn basic Chemistry concepts to create content for communication platforms.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have:
-A combination of marketing, digital media, and communications experience.
-The demonstrated ability to convert creative ideas into visual statements that can distill broad themes and attract new audiences to Chemistry events, publications, and research.
-Experience using WordPress.

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.     Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers.
