The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Upward Bound Advisor on the Gainesville campus. The Upward Bound Advisor will identify, select, and assist low-income students and potential first-generation college students in their pursuit of post-secondary education. The Upward Bound Programs at UNG serve 9th – 12th grade students at Johnson High School in Gainesville, GA and Gilmer High School in Ellijay, GA and is committed to:

  • Creating supportive relationships with students and providing safe environments for students to grow personally and academically;
  • Providing academic and advising services at school sites and in the community;
  • Assisting and acting as a resource to all who are interested in continuing their education;
  • Collaborating with the TRIO and other college access programs (including McNair Scholars, HEP, & CAMP) to sponsor events, develop staff training and assess our programs.

The Upward Bound Advisor will work in the identified target public schools four out of five days per week to increase high school retention, graduation, and postsecondary attendance rates of economically, culturally, and educationally disadvantaged students. The UB advisor will work one day per week on a UNG campus (Gainesville or Blue Ridge) performing administrative functions. The UB advisor will provide college and career preparation counseling activities as well as academic support services in coordination with the Upward Bound Counselors at each target school.

This position is funded by the U.S. Department of Education; continuation of position is based on renewal of annual funding.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The Upward Bound Advisor will:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records for participants (including college and career plans, transcripts, test scores, scholarships, GPA, events attended, etc.) with all necessary physical documentation to ensure compliance with federal requirements.
  • Review senior caseload including: needs assessment and individual academic plan, post-secondary enrollment, scholarships received, financial aid received, etc.
  • Assist high school seniors with completing applications for admissions, scholarships, financial aid, preparing and sending applications for admissions and scholarships, phone and email communication with college officials and administrators.
  • Provide academic assistance at target schools (Johnson High School and Gilmer High School, twice per week respectively) with secondary course selections including AP, honors, and dual enrollment options and post-secondary pre-planning.
  • Assist in organizing and attend overnight trips as needed including the UB Summer Institute residential program.
  • Actively develops relationships with schools’ personnel, businesses, and community agencies for partnerships in student achievements and for advancement of the program.
  • Assist with all required reports, particularly the Annual Performance Report for the federal Department of Education.

  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to work amicably and professionally with a diverse population, including parents and students from different socioeconomic circumstances.
  • Must be highly energetic.
Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required in education, guidance, counseling or related field required.
  • Two years of experience in K-12 or postsecondary educational setting working with students who are academically underserved.
  • Preferred experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Preferred knowledge of federal student aid programs to include the FAFSA and other Title IV programs.
