Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine the Quality Database Administrator/Architect functions as the leader in maintaining and continuously enhancing applications and repositories such as the Lumedx Apollo application and database, the Vizient repository database, and the Performance Manager application.  This individual will take responsibility for ensuring the continued smooth functioning of these applications and databases, implementing additional data imports and exports as determined necessary by departmental and hospital leadership, and meet the needs of staff who must access these applications and databases for abstraction and analysis.

 Duties of a Quality Database Administrator/Architect may include the following but are not limited to:

 
  • Function as the lead support of the monthly downloads from the Vizient Clinical Database application, ensuring that monthly data are successfully downloaded and then integrated into the Vizient repository database.  This may include collaborating with vendor and/or IT staff to monitor the success of monthly uploads by IT.
  • Perform updates to the Vizient repository database as needed to ensure that data tables from all Stony Brook Medicine hospitals can continue to successfully integrate.  Data table formats are updated at minimum annually by Vizient.
  • Perform necessary updates and upgrades to the Apollo application by working with Lumedx, Quality Measurement & Analytics (QMA), hospital Information Technology (IT), clinical and administrative staff.  Manage the long-term maintenance and support of the Apollo application; this includes additional data integration and other improvements.
  • Work with QMA abstraction staff clinical care areas as necessary to enhance clinical data capture and analysis, in support of internal and external quality improvement and reporting efforts and mandates.  This includes custom field development and other enhancements to the Apollo application in order to integrate required registries and to meet the needs of these programs.  Working with the services may require flexible scheduling to accommodate physician participation.
  • Function as the QMA lead for updates and upgrades to the Performance Manager decision support system clinical quality data warehouse and reporting, in collaboration with colleagues in IT and Finance.
  • Implement, maintain, and support other quality databases and applications as deemed appropriate by the Director of QMA.
  • Maintain all appropriate documentation for quality databases and applications, including process steps, data dictionaries, and other information necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of these databases.
  • Train analysts in the extraction of data from quality databases and applications.  Train end users in navigation, data entry, and routine report generation.
  • Provide technical support and coordinate data activities to develop a centralized clinical data repository.
  • Provide high quality, actionable reports to hospital leadership, Programs of Distinction (PODs), Quality Improvement (QI) and other performance improvement teams, and other groups to drive quality and safety improvement efforts. This includes aggregating, analyzing and displaying statistically-oriented, external quality reporting data in formats such as dashboards, scorecards, visualizations, and other reports.  Ensure the automation of reporting functions wherever possible.
  • Provide guidance and support on data capture, data integration, data management, data validation, analytical, and internal and external quality and safety reporting topics to other QMA personnel, QI, and other analytical and clinical departments.
  • Generate ad hoc reports and perform ad-hoc responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the Director of QMA.
  • Abide by and demonstrate Stony Brook's Mission, Vision, and Values through behavior and job performance on a day-to-day basis.  Maintain awareness of institutional quality priorities and work collaboratively with colleagues in QMA, the Quality Management Division, IT, Finance, clinical and ancillary services, and hospital leadership to accomplish organizational goals.
 Qualifications Required Qualifications:   
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other requiring database and systems administration skills, applications, programming, and/or software engineering/analysis.  Equivalent job experience or non-degree training will also be considered.
  • Three or more years or relevant experience in database administration, applications, programming, and/or software engineering/analysis.
  • SQL Server experience, including the ability to create and maintain stored procedures for import to and update of databases.
  • Experience and skill in developing and monitoring mechanisms for assessing data accuracy and completeness.
  • Superior organization skills, detail-oriented, and ability to be persistent and follow-through.
  • Problem-solving, ability to adapt, flexibility in approaches to accomplishing tasks, and ability to independently arrive at creative solutions to problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, particularly the ability to convey technical information in an accessible and understandable manner.
  • Strong listening skills with the ability to gather requirements and understand the technical barriers to project completion.
 Preferred Qualifications:

 
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other field requiring database and systems administration skills, applications, programming, and/or software engineering/analysis. 
  • Five or more years of relevant experience in database administration, applications, programming, and/or software engineering/analysis.
  • Experience with SSIS, VBA, Datawatch Monarch, open source data extraction and transformation tools such as Python and R, as well as with the SAP Business Objects Suite, particularly Web Intelligence, and Crystal Reports are a plus.  Experience with Tableau is also desirable.
  • Prior experience with health care-related systems and reporting as well as working in a health care setting and/or collaborating with clinical staff.
  • Experience as well as skill in presenting data in a variety of reporting formats and to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience and skill in managing external vendors.
