The Ithaca College Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-eligible assistant professor to begin August 16, 2020. The successful candidate will embrace our commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring, will establish an active on-campus experimental research program with significant undergraduate student involvement, and will contribute to the operation and improvement of the department, school, and college.

The faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy are committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive community within the department and college. We seek candidates with an authentic desire to utilize inclusive practices to promote an increasingly diverse population of students, staff, and faculty. The physics and astronomy faculty are also deeply committed to delivering student-centered research-based pedagogy. Candidates should be familiar or have experience with active-learning techniques and be willing to implement them in the classroom. Strong candidates will be able to teach students with diverse learning styles. Candidates must also have well-formulated ideas about how they will develop an active research program – conducting experiments in a laboratory located on the Ithaca College campus – including mentoring multi-semester senior thesis projects. Candidates with expertise in all areas of experimental physics, applied physics, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, and other closely related fields will be considered. In an effort to balance research areas in our department, we are not considering applicants proposing research programs in astronomy or astrophysics at this time.

Position/Job Qualifications

The successful candidate must have completed a PhD in physics, applied physics, engineering physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related field by August 1, 2020. Experience as a teacher of record or as a teaching assistant at the undergraduate level is required.

The candidate must address the expectations detailed in the job summary and job qualifications in these statements.

In particular, the candidate should discuss in the teaching statement their philosophy of teaching, their teaching experience, including teaching at the undergraduate level, and their interest in working at a primarily undergraduate institution. The candidate should also discuss what knowledge and/or experience they have with active-learning techniques and how they would implement those techniques at Ithaca College. In the research statement, the candidate should discuss their research background, proposed plans for research at Ithaca College, and how undergraduate students will be integrated into an active on-campus experimental research program. The candidate should discuss in the inclusion statement how they will contribute to or support diversity and inclusion in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The applicant must also provide names and email addresses of three (3) individuals who will be asked to submit letters of reference for candidates who are invited to the second round of the application process. At least one of the letter writers should speak to the candidate’s teaching ability and at least one letter writer should speak to the candidate’s research skills and ability. Emails containing a link to submit letters of reference will be auto-generated and sent to the applicant’s references upon confirmation that the candidate wishes to move forward with their application.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a vibrant community that values active and collaborative learning, meaningful student involvement with faculty in innovative research, and participation of all members of the community in activities of the department and college.

The department includes eight permanent full-time faculty and two full time staff (an administrative assistant and an equipment/laboratory specialist). The faculty maintain a close relationship with our approximately sixty undergraduate majors and minors through small classes, undergraduate involvement in research, one-on-one academic advising, and department activities. Our faculty also teach in the college’s Integrative Core Curriculum (general liberal arts education) and provide several courses to satisfy requirements for other major programs (e.g., physical therapy, chemistry).
