DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC San Diego Extension is fully self-supporting, operating year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $47 million annually in primarily fee income. The unit has over 200 career employees, including academic, management, staff and executive, as well as represented and non-represented positions. Many casual or contract employees and student workers also serve in the organization. In addition, Extension employs about 1,000 active by-agreement instructors.

Extension operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a large off-campus classroom facility. The unit maintains a robust online learning platform, operating 24/7 with web-casting and video-conferencing capability. Extension also has a strong web presence with e-commerce operating 24/7. There are over 60,000 enrollment transactions annually; 35,000 outreach certification transactions and 25,000 service transactions. Extension supports a robust network of representatives, agents, and students (both residential and online) around the globe. Along with all of this, Extension operates two television stations, a variety of public lecture programs and is active in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs and activities.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Program Manager manages the planning, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of programs and courses in the Public Service department at UCSD Extension. The incumbent will use skills as a seasoned, experienced public educational program professional to resolve a wide range of educational program issues and needs assessments. Develop new public educational programs and work on complex public educational programs of diverse scope. Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering courses, presentations and development programs. Receive general instructions and exercise judgment in selecting methods and techniques for course and instructional improvement. Fully knowledgeable in course subject matter and program.

Additional duties include: ongoing course schedule planning, instructor recruiting, student and instructor advising, promotional planning, periodic program and course evaluation and adjustment, and responding to complex programmatic issues. In conjunction with the department Director and other stakeholders, participate in long-range strategic planning. Develop outlines for new course curricula and updates, or recommend updates to existing course content. Participate in the development of strategic marketing plans and coordinate marketing events. Develop and monitor budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience working in Education program content, such as teacher credentialing and supporting K-12 students and adult learners. Continuing education in related field required.

  • Proven experience designing, developing and managing educational programs for adults including working with professional associations and corporate contract training. Proven knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.

  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations and courses to meet organizational needs.

  • Strong demonstrated experience presenting program information to individuals and groups of potential candidates and partners.

  • Demonstrated experience providing academic advising to students.

  • Thorough experience with marketing concepts including participating in developing marketing plans, targeting audiences, and coordinating marketing events.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and overseeing budgets.

  • Proficient skills in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).

  • Strong analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills. Excellent communication skills, verbal and written with strong presentation skills. Editing skills for memos, routine correspondence, and business agreements. Superb knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Proven experience working within a team framework. Experience participating and presenting in group discussions and meetings regarding systems, procedures, policies and goals of the department.

  • Excellent organization abilities and project management skills to manage complex tasks, with competing demands for time and resources. Ability to prioritize and schedule work effectively within set guidelines to meet established deadlines.
