DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the VC-CFO, Information Technology Services (ITS) delivers Enterprise information technology services to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) under the leadership of the campus Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Information Technology Services (IT Services) uses world-class services and technologies to empower UC San Diego's mission to transform California and the world as a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. The IT Infrastructure Operations team provides Mainframe, Data Center, Computing Infrastructure, Enterprise Network and Data Management for ITS and the campus community. The group consists of several teams and leaders.

The Applications Platforms Team provides system management and support for service lines as part of the Computing Infrastructure group, providing services for a highly available enterprise IT environment that spans multiple data centers hosted on premise and cloud based. Responsibilities will leverage both solid technical knowledge and superb customer service skills.

Responsibilities:

• Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced systems infrastructure professional with a full understanding of industry best practices and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues that are moderately complex in scope. Selects methods and techniques to obtain solutions. Evaluates new technologies including performing simple to moderate cost / benefit analyses.

• Serving as a Systems Engineer for hardware, operating systems, and network management performing monitoring, assessment, maintenance and upgrade of all critical systems, interfaces and services. Works with management and junior staff to strategize, plan, and build the architecture of a complex Linux and Windows environment. Work may involve central or departmental computer systems and networks, including data and application systems administration.

• Incumbent will serve as a Systems Engineer on the team, responsible for supporting and maintaining campus web infrastructure services to support the Link Family of Applications, the Content Management System, Data Warehousing and software development environment operations for other enterprise applications.

• Interface well with technical, non-technical, and management personnel across departmental and project boundaries and feel comfortable giving presentations to management. Will be expected to collaborate with other UCSD departments and external partners to deploy services and technologies. In addition, the individual will provide overall consultation for all client & server systems hardware and software installations, configuration, maintenance and documentation in a large department.

  • Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends.

  • Employee must be available to travel as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Technology, Information or Computer Science related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Knowledge of the Linux operating system and programming environment, including software installations, troubleshooting, security, Makefiles, Unix shells and related scripting tools, revision control, etc., sufficient to effectively communicate with audiences with varying technological knowledge.

  • Knowledge of and experience with applying best practices for systems security, performance tuning, automation and orchestration with technologies including but not limited to Chef, Puppet, Ansible, BitBucket, SOA, DB2.

  • Experience in architecture of secure systems platforms, leveraging cloud services in a hybridized topology for ITservice delivery.

  • Knowledge of and experience with VMWare ESX, Amazon Web Services and other virtualization hypervisors. This includes provisioning, performance tuning, and recovery.

  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Experience in the configuration of complex application, storage, compute and networking environment with multiple dependencies in support of critical high impact enterprise IT services.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Knowledge of network protocols and standards used for data communications, including TCP/IP, SNMP, UDP, SMTP etc., to include demonstrated understanding both of protocol process and packet construction, troubleshooting approaches, and experience developing software using or communicating with these protocols.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of the Linux operating system and programming environment, including software installations, troubleshooting, and security.

  • Experience with automation of systems administration and configuration management using Bash, Shell, Perl, or Python scripts.
