DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a new Staff Research Associate 1 to conduct a variety of standard experimental procedures in support of a research program in ocean carbon dioxide measurements. Conduct analysis of seawater for CO2 parameters, undertake limited fieldwork, and perform any necessary chemical analyses.

The incumbent will also maintain a laboratory notebook, enter experimental data into a computer, and produce written and/or verbal reports. In addition, the incumbent will maintain laboratory equipment and supplies inventory, ensure equipment maintenance and order lab supplies.

  • Must be willing and able to undertake fieldwork at sea on occasion.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. Chemistry, Geology/Geochemistry); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Basic understanding of the principles of ocean CO2 chemistry.

  • Proven knowledge of sample collection techniques for CO2 in seawater.

  • Familiarity working in a laboratory making chemical measurements.

  • Proven ability to perform various chemical analyses and laboratory procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience using computers for data processing and word processing.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory Safety Procedures.

  • Strong writing and communication skills.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing and able to undertake fieldwork at sea on occasion.

  • Must possess a valid California driver's license.
