DESCRIPTIONThe Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a new Staff Research Associate 1 to conduct a variety of standard experimental procedures in support of a research program in ocean carbon dioxide measurements. Conduct analysis of seawater for CO2 parameters, undertake limited fieldwork, and perform any necessary chemical analyses.
The incumbent will also maintain a laboratory notebook, enter experimental data into a computer, and produce written and/or verbal reports. In addition, the incumbent will maintain laboratory equipment and supplies inventory, ensure equipment maintenance and order lab supplies.
- Must be willing and able to undertake fieldwork at sea on occasion.
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. Chemistry, Geology/Geochemistry); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Basic understanding of the principles of ocean CO2 chemistry.
Proven knowledge of sample collection techniques for CO2 in seawater.
Familiarity working in a laboratory making chemical measurements.
Proven ability to perform various chemical analyses and laboratory procedures.
Demonstrated experience using computers for data processing and word processing.
Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory Safety Procedures.
Strong writing and communication skills.
Must be willing and able to undertake fieldwork at sea on occasion.
Must possess a valid California driver's license.
