Departmental Overview

Chemistry and Mathematical and Physical Sciences (ChaMPS) is a service region within Campus Shared Services (CSS) - a division of the UC Berkeley Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration - provides reliable, high-quality integrative administrative support to faculty, academics, staff, student employees, and retirees in support of the UC Berkeley mission of teaching, research, and public service.

ChaMPS provides services in the areas of Business and Financial Services, Human Resources/ Academic Personnel Support and Research Administration (pre-award and post-award administration) for the College of Chemistry, the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences in the College of Letters & Science, Space Science Laboratory, and several other ORUs.

Responsibilities

  • Applies advanced HR concepts to counsel senior managers on HR issues, employee and labor policies, procedures, and appropriate practices.
  • As technical leader provides guidance to managers and supervisors on compensation programs, personnel policies and procedures.
  • Conducts highly complex and varied analysis of issues or concepts and develops resulting recommendations employing political acumen and integrating information to determine appropriate courses of action and their implications.
  • Counsels employees concerning sensitive and difficult to resolve work-related problems and recommends to senior management systemic remedies such as training, changes to organizations practices and procedures.
  • Conducts difficult termination interviews, providing feedback to management, and recommending changes to department practices as appropriate.
  • Works with client groups on highly complex re-organizations and staffing objectives to assist in meeting business objectives.
  • Provides support to units or departments in administering policies and programs in the areas of employment, labor relations, wage and salary administration, training, and other areas of HR.
  • Provides direction, guidance, and training to HR Generalists and HR Specialists. Works with HR Generalists on their development and prepares them to take on greater responsibilities and to handle difficult cases.
  • Train new HR Generalist and offer ongoing support and check ins. Point of contact for HR Partners regarding questions around HR Policies, academic case work, and conflict resolution.
  • Leads special projects to improve the efficiency and process flow of various HR activities. Works on determining gap analysis of process flows and works with managers and supervisors to implement improvements of processes. Point of contact to roll out new initiatives or policy changes, and follows up with HR Partners and Generalists to ensure new practices are put into place.
  • Effectively and collaboratively interacts with diverse client groups at all levels on campus. Works to make CSS a diverse and inclusive environment.

    Required Qualifications

  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service in high volume, fast-paced, professional environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of human resources concepts, campus policies and procedures, union/labor contracts, state and federal laws, and staff/academic best practices including: employee relations, labor relations, salary administration, employment, and other areas of human resources as well as campus initiatives relation to and/or impacting human resources.
  • Possesses advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of UC Berkeley's Human Resources Management System (HRMS) and other related business software programs and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively interact with diverse client groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.
  • Has skills associated with conflict resolution and effective communication.
  • Possess active listening and critical thinking skills.
  • Advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly skilled in communicating clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.
  • Experience with Senate Benefits, leaves, and appointments.

    Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or 5+ years experience/training in human resources, organizational development, or training & development.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Licenses or certifications, if any:
  • Human Resources certification preferred

    Salary & Benefits

    This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience.
