LAB RESEARCH ANALYST II

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Execute cultures of primary cells with impeccable sterile techniques and adherence to safety protocols.Proficiently manipulate clinical samples (whole blood, PBMCs, etc.), primary cells and established cell lines, culture supernatants and stocks of infectious agents.Prepare culture media, reagents and solutions according to specifications.Isolate primary cells using fluorescent-activated or magnetic-activated cell sorting from specimens collected from individuals, non-human primates and other small animals. Perform functional high-throughput screenings (HTS) of biological samples (e.g. serum), cell culture supernatants and purified antibodies (e.g. ELISA, neutralization assays, etc.).Coordinate the acquisition of reagents (both internally and externally) needed to complete assigned experiments.Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including complex automation systems. Perform basic technical troubleshooting. Implement and optimize new and existing methods using dedicated software.Maintain laboratory workspace organized, clean and compliant with safety regulations. Act as safety liason/officer for the laboratory.Perform DNA and RNA extraction, RT-PCR, nested PCR and overlapping PCR.Produce and purify monoclonal antibodies from transiently transfected cell cultures. Maintain detailed documentation of executed work, ensure data integrity and accessibility.Lead the development, validation and standardization of new techniques rapidly and independently to expand the laboratory technical portfolio. Optimize existing methods and workflows to improve throughput and reduce costs. Compile, analyze and interpret data from experimental results. Prepare complete and accurate reports for internal and external circulation (e.g. summaries, abstracts, graphs, presentations, posters). Present data internally and externally as needed.Review journals, abstracts and scientific literature to design and develop original procedures and techniques.Establish and support the implementation across the team of electronic laboratory notebooks and sample management software.Maintain updated information on reagent and material costs and sources associated with current procedures for project management.Supervise, train and instruct laboratory personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures as needed.Assist the PI with the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.Adhere to BSL-2 and BSL-3 working conditions and safety regulations.Perform other duties as requested by the PI.

Work Schedule

You must be willing and available to work flexible hours which may include later start and end times with the understanding that work hours may need to be modified to ensure a project/task has reached a logical and acceptable stopping point to maintain the integrity of the science.

Education, Skills, & Experience PREFERENCES

    Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related scientific field. Master’s degree a plusTwo years of relevant research laboratory experienceExperience in handling cell/tissue cultures with strong record of performing sterile techniquesExperience in performing biochemical and immunological measurements of biological variables (e.g. ELISA, bead-based multiplex assays, flow cytometry).Experience in performing RNA extraction, RT and PCR. Experience in protein purification and identification techniques.Willing to work with human specimensMust be detail-oriented, focused, well organized and approach procedures with critical thinking and strong experimental record keeping.Must be able to manage multiple priorities with firm deadlines in a highly dynamic and competitive environment, execute experiments and generate deliverables in a timely fashion. Must be able to work effectively, enforce and follow procedures independently and in a team environment as required. Must have excellent communication skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

    Previous experience in managing high throughput screening (HTS) and automated systems.Previous experience in working in fast paced environments managing multiple priorities simultaneously.Previous experience in leading contract-based projects (either in industry or academia).Previous experience working with biological and chemical materials.Previous experience in handling small animals.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience

Work requires four years of research experience. A related master's OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B.
